The Privileged and the Damned
Kimberly Lang
Heat Level: 3 (Sensual)

Introducing The Marshalls… A rich, powerful family: if the U.S. had a royal family, this would be it!

Running scared, Lily needs a fresh start— and, fingers crossed, she's found one. After all, why would any of her new employers, members of the hot–shot Marshall dynasty, even think to look beyond her humble facade?

Until she catches the roving eye of infamous heartbreaker Ethan Marshall…

A fling with one of the Marshalls is a bad idea—especially for a girl with a scandalous past. But Lily is terrifyingly susceptible to Ethan's lethal brand of high–class charm…

When a political son crosses with a down to earth wayward girl, all manners of feathers are sure to get ruffled.

Lily Black finally has a second chance at life working for the politically involved Marshall Family as a stable hand at their country estate. She doesn’t have any big expectations, just wants a simple, uncomplicated existence and then Ethan Marshall shows up.

Ethan abhors politics, liars, and complex emotions. He tends to shy from the girls his family would rather have him date, and when he meets Lily all his regular rules about relationships go out the window. Ethan feels drawn to her, and even though Lily doesn’t care to open up about her previous life, their passion soars. But when Lily’s past finally catches up to her is their desire and love for each other enough to keep them together?

Lang created some extremely interesting characters in this story. Lily’s attitudes about relationships and just wanting a fresh start are refreshing, as Lily has no illusions about the life she led to the one she is leading now. I also really enjoyed how the characters interact, especially Ethan and his brothers. Right off the readers get a sense of how close the Marshall family is, and how they band together. Like in this one scene:

“Want to tell me what the hell that was all about?” Brady asked as he swung up onto Spider’s back later that afternoon.

Ethan bit back a laugh as he checked the stirrups and mounted Tinker. Using his best innocent voice, he played dumb. “What was what about?”

“Lily tripping all over herself back at the stables and turning that amazing shade of red.” Brady gave him that Big Brother look. “What did you do to her?”

“I’ve been her less than twelve hours. What makes you think I could ‘do’ anything to her?”

Brady snorted. “This is you we’re talking about.”

Overall the conflicts within the story were great, a lot of true emotion behind some of the issues with Lily and Ethan trying to get together. The only real issue I had was with Ethan, as multiple characters mentioned how inappropriate it was for anyone in the Marshall family to get involved with the hired help. Ethan has a such strong loyalties to his family that I found it difficult to buy that he involve himself with Lily, and bring their relationship out in the open instead of keeping it on the down low for as long as possible. This is a quick contemporary read that offers something different from the normal rich boy meets poor girl trope, and did I mention it’s hot! Plus, the next Marshall story is on its way.
