Review
Montana Hendrix finally knows what she wants to do with her life. Working with therapy dogs has given this Hendrix triplet new purpose in life. Her sister, Dakota, found true love, now it’s Montana’s turn. She just never expected to find Mr. Right in the burn unit of Fool’s Gold Hospital.
Dr. Simon Bradley prefers to be completely cut off from everything except his job. The visiting plastic surgeon doesn’t realize that detachment isn’t an option in Fool’s Gold. Especially when Montana Hendrix and a little dog named Cece begin to burrow their way into his heart. Can Simon continue his rootless existence when the allure of life with Montana is so strong?
This is by far my favorite Susan Mallery book. The plot is original and fresh and the hero is a lot more complex and interesting than her standard All-American boys. Simon is tall, dark, and wounded. He’s got real issues and a painful past to get over. Rather than immediately falling head-over-heels for Montana, he’s the reluctant one. But the added depth to this nomadic surgeon comes with how he treats his burn patients and the wonderful well of compassion that he can tap into.
Montana is a fairly standard Mallery heroine. She’s quirky and funny and brings with her the great support system of the Hendrix clan. I love the unique nature of her job and the dynamic it brings to her relationship with Simon. The therapy dogs work not only to add an unpredictability to Simon’s well-ordered life, but they also help bring a bit more depth to Montana and her relationship with Simon.
After this book, I’m really looking forward to reading the next Fool’s Gold book. I’m hoping this book signals a shift in the standard Mallery romance and I can’t wait to see what happens.
