Review

Angelica Carew’s life is unraveled when the steamboat she’s traveling on with her father catches fire. She awakens in the care of a hardened, mysterious man. The same man who attempted to ravish her right before the steamboat accident. Claiming to have married her during her recovery, Angelica has no choice but to put her life and future in his hands.

Renold Harden wants revenge and he’s willing to do anything to get it. He’s after the gambler who stole his family’s land in a card game, a game that cost his step-father his life.  Yet the gambler only holds one thing close to his heart—his daughter.  Marrying Angelica is the only way to regain the family home, and manipulating her into loving him is the final step in his plan.
My blurb above hardly does this book justice. This book is perfect execution personified. The dialogue, the characters, and the plot weave seamlessly. Renold is the ultimate tortured hero, and his silver tongue could twist any girl’s heart. The mysterious actions and deceiving lies Renold tells build the conflict continuously. I was constantly waiting for the world to crash around him and Angelica.

Angelica’s character is the vision of light compared to Renold. Ironically he sees her as this angel who claims his feelings and forces him to analyze his own wants and desires. I liked Angelica because she is a strong heroine willing to weather the circumstances that her life has been brought to. She’s courageous and tends to address each situation with hope that things will work out. One can only hope that Renold will not break her spirit in his quest to seek revenge.

The villain is wicked and ruthless. I found myself considering two possible suspects for the majority of the book. The element of surprise is well executed, and I truly didn’t know who was behind everything until all was revealed. Other characters including Renold’s sister and mother play a role in the story, along with Renold’s close friend Michel Farness. I can only hope that Farness get’s his own tale in the future, as he is truly a lady’s man and the opposite of his tortured friend.

True to form, Blake has created another Southern Historical masterpiece with a story that builds from deep emotion and turmoil. The result is an emotional rollercoaster that left me speechless at times, and praying for a miracle during others. If you’re a fan of the historical and you want a witty, biting romance Silver Tongued Devil is a must buy.
