Can a pirate learn that the only true treasure lies in a woman's heart?

Widowed Silence Hollingbrook is impoverished, lovely, and kind--and nine months ago she made a horrible mistake. She went to a river pirate for help in saving her husband and in the process made a bargain that cost her her marriage. That night wounded her so terribly that she hides in the foundling home she helps run with her brother. Except now that same river pirate is back...and he's asking for her help.

Charming Mickey O'Connor is the most ruthless river pirate in London. Devastatingly handsome and fearsomely intelligent, he clawed his way up through London's criminal underworld. Mickey has no use for tender emotions like compassion and love, and he sees people as pawns to be manipulated. And yet he's never been able to forget the naive captain's wife who came to him for help and spent one memorable night in his bed...talking.

When his bastard baby girl was dumped in his lap--her mother having died--Mickey couldn't resist the Machiavellian urge to leave the baby on Silence's doorstep. The baby would be hidden from his enemies and he'd also bind Silence to him by her love for his daughter.

Review

Silence Hollingbrook has been publically humiliated by “Charming” Mickey O’Conner, the well-known river pirate, causing her reputation to border the line of ruin.  Worst of all, Silence lost the faith of her husband and then loses him in ship wreck.  Now, Silence is again forced to deal with the pirate who ruined her life, only this time she refuses to let him have hold over her.  When Mary Darling, a baby from the orphanage Silence co-runs, goes missing, Silence soon finds herself living in the home of Mickey O’Conner, falling for him as she peels off the layers of his rough exterior bit by bit.  When Silence realizes the danger Mickey claims her life is in is true, she can’t help but trust the one man she never thought she would in order to save the child she loves.  The problem is, Silence finds herself falling in love with him as well.

“Charming” Mickey O’Conner has a past that no childhood should contain.  Though he’s made way in the world, Mickey has wounds that run deep and an enemy whowill not stop until he’s ruined Mickey for good.  Aware that the one woman he has ever loved and the daughter she is taking care of are in danger, Mickey brings Silence and Mary to live with him.  Just when he thinks they are the safest they will be, mutiny and betrayal take place in his palace home, causing Mickey to re-think his plans for their safety and his plans for life.

Scandalous Desires was a thrilling and entertaining read.  I enjoyed the background in this story almost as much as the present.  Ms. Hoyt brilliantly set up a plot that kept me glued to the pages.  The characters are interesting, well developed and charming.  It was hard not to like them even when they made mistakes.

The book flows extremely well.  It has a natural and believable quality to it.  I felt as if Mickey and Silence truly lived, though their parents really should have thought of better names.  It took a while for the romantic scenes to kick in, but when they did, they were hot.  Everything fit together in a timely manner and wove a web that stayed together tightly.  I would recommend this novel and highly suggest it as your next read.  It holds romance, mystery, action and so much more.
