The Vampire Next Door
Ashlyn Chase
Heat Level: 3.5 (Very Sensual)

In this third installment of Chase's lively, sexy, paranormal trilogy, we meet witch Morgaine, who is deathly afraid of the dark, and her vigilante vampire neighbor Sly, who has his reasons for hating sunlight.

Sly needs Morgaine's magic to help heal a broken fang, but with further help, and sometimes hindrance, from the wacky apartment dwellers around them, they may become each other's last hope for a normal life...

The Vampire Next Door is a fun and sweet paranormal romance. The characters will make you laugh and the romance will make you sigh.

Morgaine is a witch. She is not just any witch - she suffers from agoraphobia and nyctophobia (fear of the dark). These fears are a huge part of who she is, but she has been able to make her own world in her apartment building. Her cousin, Gwyneth, lives across the hall and helps with any errands Morgaine needs run. But Morgaine wants more.

Sly Flores has been a vampire for 26 years and is ready for something more. He loved his wife that he lost the night he became a vampire, but he is lonely and intrigued by the witch that lives in his building.

I love the way this book flows. The setting is kept mainly to the apartment building, but as the characters visit each other’s apartments and interacts with the various characters in the building it seems like a much wider setting. There is plenty of fun and witty dialogue and the story doesn’t drag at all. I did get rather tired of Gwyneth’s sayings and speech pattern. It was a bit over the top for me, but still just a minor irritation.

The romance in The Vampire Next Door is sweet. Morgaine and Sly slowly enter into their relationship and it moves very nicely. There is no major hurdle for the couple to overcome other than Sly being a vampire and Morgaine’s insecurities. The really momentum of the story is Sly’s maker and his plans for Sly. There is also a subplot features a “cure” for Sly. I thoroughly enjoyed each aspect of the plot.

The Vampire Next Door is the third book in this series, but it can stand-alone. I do think having read the first two books helped understand what was unique about the apartment building and gave some foundation for the who’s-who in the building. Plus, Strange Neighbors (book #1) and The Werewolf Upstairs (book #2) are both fun reads.
