She's the vampire that could destroy a nation.

At least, that's what Pinkerton detective Finn Dunne thinks of Tara Fox. Capturing her aboard a ship sneaking its way northward, he's convinced she's been sent to take out President Lincoln. While she's certainly the most attractive assassin he's ever faced, that won't keep him from his duty.

Tara has always been caught between worlds. As a vampire born and raised in Key West, she has many friends among the humans. Many friends that are now fighting and dying in the raging Civil War.

When her strange dreams began, she thought of them as abstract visions. But she now knows that she must travel to Washington, D.C., and protect the president at all costs. Finn still won't trust her, despite what he's seen. And if Tara has to go through him—or bring reinforcements—to save Lincoln, she will do whatever it takes, even if it costs her her heart.

Review

I had the honor and privilege of reviewing yet another one of Ms. Graham’s books this month and while I wasn’t all that enamored of the amount of violence in the story, I did enjoy the romance and the historical setting of the book.

This is the story of a half vampire woman named Tara Fox. Ths story is set in the time of the civil war. She’s been having dreams/visions of Abraham Lincoln and senses he is in danger. She makes a vow to try to reach him to save his life.

Phineas (Finn) Dunne is a Pinkerton Agent charged with the safety of the president. He hears of a plot originating in Key West led by a person who goes by the name of Gator. Finn travels down to Key West to capture the villain and thwart the plot.

Finn meets Tara in the midst of a sea battle and begins to suspect her and her friend, Richard, of either being a part of Gator’s team or maybe even Gator himself.

Then the story gets a bit too violent for me. There is a lot, and I mean a lot, of decapitation of vampires. It seems the fort, the city and the ships they come across are infected by a virus which turns the men, women and children into vampires and the only way to insure that they die is to take their heads.

I’m a major fan of Heather Graham and I love the light paranormal touch she usually infuses into her stories. For me, personally, this one was too dark and too violent for my comfort. I’m still giving it a four because the romance is great. The hero is wonderful and the heroine is brave and true. The historical detail is well done as per the usual Heather Graham novel. So, if you aren’t squeamish like me, you’ll enjoy the whole package. If you are squeamish, you’ll like the romance parts.
