Ebenezer Scrooge has never been known for the greatness of his heart. A miser, a leech, a penny-pinching old coot... Say what you will about him, though—he’s never actually sucked someone’s blood.

That dubious honor belongs to the vampires who surround him, preying on the weak and laying traps for the strong. They’ve dogged his footsteps since he was born, driving him from the love of his friends, family, and faithful fiancée.

Now, on Christmas Eve, Scrooge’s old friend Jacob Marley rises from the grave to warn him about the evil gathering around him. With three mysterious spirits to guide him, he rediscovers his lost love Belle, toiling fearlessly as a seamstress by day and vampire hunter by night. He sees the secrets of his nephew Fred and his clerk Bob Cratchit, who risk their lives as Belle’s loyal soldiers. And he learns of the plot mounting to attack all of them, starting with the innocent sacrifice of Bob’s son Tiny Tim…

Scrooge has only one night to save himself and all that he once treasured—but if he can vanquish the vampires, he might finally earn back the love he cast away…

Review

This book is a retelling of the traditional tale of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol albeit with a unique twist. The vampire queen, Griselda, has learned that one Ebenezer Scrooge will be born and will eventually be the sire of the Scion of the Culling. In other words, the child will father the man that will destroy the vampire race forever.

Queen Griselda starts, on the day that Ebenezer is born, a campaign to harden his heart and one day to make him one of them. She causes Ebenezer all kinds of angst and sadness in his childhood. When asked why she doesn’t just kill the boy so he can’t sire a child, she replies that it would be more interesting and fun to turn the future father of the Scion of the Culling into a vampire.

The traditional story we all know is told by Ms. Gray with her vampires mixed in and it was a delight to read. Ms. Gray has Dickens’ voice down cold and her interweaving of the vampires is quite well done. If you like Dickens and you like vampires, this is the story for you.

I feel as if I have to add one caveat though, since this is a review site for romance. There really isn’t a lot of romance in this story. It’s very lightly touched upon but the real joy of this story is in the retelling of a classic. If you want lots of romance and the sexy vampires of the traditional romance story, this is not the book for you.

In short, I enjoyed the story and the characters and would recommend it as a non-romance read.
