Review

Highland Hunger is a paranormal romance anthology featuring some sexy Scottish vampires. The three stories are unconnected and have a very different feel.

Dark Embrace by Hannah Howell is the first novella. Raibert MacNachton comes across a gorgeous woman running for her life through the forest. He rescues her and is immediately attracted. He also realizes that she is like him – a vampire. Raibert promises to rescue her friends that are being held by an evil laird.

I enjoyed the story, but the romance between Raibeart and Una felt like it happened at warp speed. At first she is afraid of him, but two days later they are having sex at every opportunity. The vampire part of the story is interesting and definitely important to the characters and to the plot. Una’s friends are being held because of the differentness.

The Guardian by Michele Sinclair is my least favorite of the three novellas. Dorian has promised never to fall in love with a human. They don’t live long enough and it is torture to watch someone you love die a slow death. He faces a challenge when he meets Moirae Deincourt. She is beautiful and strong.

I just couldn’t connect to the characters in this novella. I found myself skipping big sections of the novella just to get to the end.

A Knight Beyond Black by Jackie Ivie is my favorite of the three. Iain Duncan MacAvee is everything Lady Tira wants in a man. He is sexy, strong, and has a definite presence. However he does have one flaw – he doesn’t ask, he commands. When she learns that they are engaged, and have been for her entire life, she tries to get out of the engagement while she is secretly excited by the idea of Iain becoming her husband.

This was my favorite couple. I loved Iain. He is an ultimate alpha, but there are times when he comes across as vulnerable and it just made me love him all the more. The relationship between Tira and Iain is rocky, but it makes their happily ever after all the more sweet.
