Review

Marc Brannan is excited to sink his teeth into a new murder case. It’s been a while since he's been out in the field and is willing to prove to his boss that he's more than ready. He is assigned to work with investigator Josette Langley. She is the one woman he can’t forget.

Years ago, when Josette was a teenager, she accused a boy of trying to rape her. Marc was the officer on the case and he immediately took the boy’s side. When they met years later, they had an affair and Marc realizes that Josette hadn't lied.  Shortly, Josette was involved in another case and she accused his best friend of murder and Marc fed the prosecutor information about her rape trial and they ripped into Josette., causing a rift between them.

Now Marc and Josette are teamed together but Josette is not the young woman who will let Marc hurt her. She is guarded and leery to work with him. Side by side, they work to track a killer. Against Josette’s better judgment, she lets Marc back in and they try to heal the wounds of the past.

I really liked this story but I do have some minor gripes. First, Marc and Josette talked in circles. They both kept rehashing the past and once they forgave one another, they kept apologizing. This cycle takes up too much of the book. Then, I knew the identity of the killer too early. The mystery is gone and replaced with a cycle of the characters fumbling around, scratching their heads trying to figure out the identity of the killer who is right in front of them. The plot could have been fleshed out more.
