Review
In Cara Elliott’s second Lords of Midnight novel, readers are introduced to Lady Eliza Brentford, a widow, whose brother has gone rogue, at least where financial matters are concerned. Determined to stop him from wasting their quickly dwindling fortune, Lady Eliza follows her brother to his favorite house of corruption. It is here that she encounters the Marquess of Haddan, a notorious rake, if there ever was one. Gryffin, the Marquess, has a pair of eyes that could charm any lady with one glance and a wildly attractive and seductive body to match that has not gone unnoticed by Lady Eliza.
When her brother invites Gryffin to her estate, Eliza, a widow, finds herself entangled in a passionate affair with a man who promises nothing. Unsure if her emotion is real or pure lust, Eliza finds herself in an irresistible and sexy position that could possibly ruin her.
I love Cara Elliott’s writing. She never fails to attract my attention and keep it with her unique plots and well developed characters. Eliza, whose name I find unsexy, is a character full of dreams and robbed of love. Due to the lack of affection in her life, Eliza a widow plans to live for herself and use her artistic talents to help make her dreams come true. Until, Gryffin enters the story and Eliza finds herself entangled in his life and bed sheets.
If you’re thinking this book is just another romance, think again. Nestled within this story is a love affair, two artistic and incognito characters looking to pursue their dreams, a selfish brother with despicable friends and flowers galore. I learned quite a lot about the meanings of many flowers from this book. I enjoyed how Cara took a typical rake and gave him a unique spin. Unlike most rakes, Gryffin is already on the path of self-improvement when he meets Eliza, causing their relationship to grow deeper from the start rather than in the end.
Eliza is a strong heroin that doesn’t need anyone to hold her hand; she just needs love and appreciation. Given these statements the cause of their relationships strife didn’t seem to be a strong enough rift, though I understood the need for a tiff, of sorts. If you love Regency romance, historical romance, gardens, cats or seductive and steamy reads, this one is for you.
