Review
In the last hellhounds book the Sleuth Hound meets his match. Who expected it to be a vicar’s daughter with a heart of courage that would outlast almost any man? Not me.
Sensible Sophie Lawrence doesn’t do anything wrong. At least that’s what her family believes, since her mother’s death Sophie takes care of everyone: her ailing father and two sisters. The verge of her first sister’s wedding is at hand when rogues descend with a scandal that will destroy Sophie’s sister’s future. What’s a lady to do?
Cameron Daggett cannot believe his ears when he hears his childhood friend seeking a gentleman in The Lair. Curiosity hasn’t killed him yet and he stumbles upon a plot that could lead him directly to the revenge he’s sought against his half-brother for years. The bonus is getting to be near Sophie, especially since her visual appearance drives him to throw caution to the wind.
Cameron is hilarious in this story, and even more so when I was introduced to his foil, Sophie. He’s getting distracted in the streets, climbing pipes to bedrooms, and throw completely off kilter by the woman who once followed him about the countryside. I loved to see this man squirm; that’s a horrible thing to say but it’s true. In previous books he’s always been the one to tease the other hellhounds. While, he’s assisted he made love sound like a disease. Yet, he was the one who tried to convince Sophie to abandon her family at the tender age of 16 to elope. For such a cynic he certainly changes his tune upon seeing Sophie’s gorgeous face.
Sophie inspires me. She’s got the level head, but being around Cameron inspires her to be dangerous and to take risks. It’s more than just love, and this heroine displays multitudes of heroics throughout the book. From pickpocketing to concocting a hair brain scheme to infiltrate the infamous Lair not once, but twice, Sophie is definitely brave beyond compare.
There’s plenty of intrigue and danger, Elliott is good at throwing those tidbits in and raising the stakes. A couple of villains equally atrocious play a role in the story, though they reminded me of the villains from the second Lords of Midnight book. I can only hope that future tales won’t have these similarities. I really enjoy my villains.
Overall, this was a fun adventure for the final Lords of Midnight book. I felt like I was swept away by a pirate and cast upon shores unknown. I loved the adventure and look forward to more from Elliott.
