For millennia the struggle between light and dark, between the upper and lower realms, has been policed by a secret group of warriors culled from every fabric of existence. They are both otherworld and human, male and female. They are light and dark themselves and known to each other as the League of Guardians. Their pledge, to protect the line between dominions and make sure neither side grows too powerful. If they fall, so shall the earth, the heavens and hell. And there will be no more.

With darkness all around him, The League of Guardians is his only means of redemption...

Azaiel, the fallen, has been given a second chance to atone for the sins of his past. With demons gathering and threatening the league, he must find out if their circle has been breached. What he doesn't foresee is a woman--a fierce warrior--who will turn his world upside down and awaken his tortured soul.

Rowan James is a powerful witch out to avenge the death of her beloved grandmother, but she needs an ally. Will she be able to trust a man with secrets as dark as the sorrow in his eyes? Loving Rowan means risking salvation and yet Azaiel cannot ignore the hunger burning hot between them--his one last chance at happiness. With danger all around them, will these two desperate souls finally find love in each other? Or be forever damned...

Then their supposedly quick affair suddenly turns serious. And Prince Adam finds himself in a quandary. Say goodbye to the one woman who sets his heart and body on fire, or defy all of the rules and cause the scandal of the century.

Review

Aziel is sent on a mission to find out who is breaching the League’s inner circle and who killed Cara, a powerful witch. He comes face to face with Cara’s granddaughter, Rowan James and drama pursues. A powerful demon lord has marked her and Azaiel wants to know why. Who is Rowan James and why is she so important?

Rowan is shocked to see a mysterious stranger in her grandmother’s home when she arrives for a visit. Her grandmother is dead and she must find out who killed her. Azaiel claims to be there to help her but can she really trust a stranger? She has little choice because the demon who marked her is one of the most powerful around and her skills as a witch is a little rusty.

Wow. This story takes on so many elements. There is a bit of paranormal, UF and romance blended together. The action is fast-paced and there is so much going on that there is little time to take a breath. Even with the action, the author does a great job blending the romance into the story. Azaiel and Rowan heat things up while fighting the bad guys and dealing with Rowan’s crazy family.

I loved Rowan’s feisty and independent spirit. She is strong and knows what she wants and is not afraid to go get it. Instead of Azaiel chasing her (which is typically the norm in romances), Rowan is the one doing the chasing. She wants Azaiel and he doesn’t stand a chance once she sets her mind to having him. They have some pretty hot love scenes.

Azaiel is a great lead for this book. He has a lot to atone for, especially being The Fallen, and the league is distrustful of him. He has a lot to prove to his league but he holds his own. Despite the fact that he claims to be a bad person, Azaiel shows his feelings for Rowan in the smallest ways.

My only complaint is that there is so much going on that at times the story felt uneven. The author shifts from action to drama to romance in a blink of an eye. Then the cycle would repeat. I would have like her to slow down so I could get more interaction with the characters.

Overall, I enjoyed this story. I can’t wait to see what happens in the league next and I would love to know more about Rowan’s crazy family.
