The sexy baseball players of Jennifer Seasons' Diamonds and Dugouts series are back with the story of a single mom, a hot rookie, and a second chance at love.

Single mother Sonny Miller has spent years avoiding love. A rotten childhood and an even rottener ex-boyfriend left her determined to protect her son—and herself—against the risks of romance. That is, until hotshot ballplayer JP Trudeau swaggers into her carefully constructed life, all sin-with-me eyes and irresistible grin. Sonny can't help but feel drawn to the sexy, confident man, even as every fiber of her being tells her to keep running the bases . . .

JP is known for being fast on his feet, not fast with his heart. But meeting Sonny and her boy sparks something in him—something he's never felt before, not from all the cleat-chasers in the major leagues. Sonny may be hell-bent on keeping him at arm's length no matter what, but this rookie has a plan. To get the girl, he must step up to the plate and convince her to take another chance on love . . . before this game gets rained out.

Review

Seasons second book in her Diamonds and Dugouts series is a sweet romance with plenty of conflict.

Sonny Miller, single mother and entrepreneur, isn’t looking for romance. She wants to be a mother first and foremost. Men, thus far in her life, have been nothing but a disappointment.  That is until JP Trudeau, hottest ball player alive, comes into her life. At first it’s looking like he just wants a fling, but when he won’t seem to go away Sonny starts thinking maybe he’s wanting more. What more is – is exactly what JP needs to figure out.

The heroine of this story is funny and tough as nails. I didn’t really like her too much, but I think that’s because she reminds me of me; superstitious, ambitious, and stubborn. Sonny is an amazing mom and when she finally does let loose I could get understand why JP would be interested in her.

JP is this all-around great guy. His life is a like a fairy tale and in general I liked JP. The points of the story from his point-of-view were probably the most enjoyable to me. His vulnerability is definitely an appealing factor as he finds himself in unfamiliar waters with Sonny. He tries so hard to be the good guy that he doesn’t seem to realize when he’s being pushy or overbearing. Plus, he’s got no clue on the rules of dating a single mom or interacting with her child.

The other fun factor is this read is light and easy to get into. Most of the conflict that occurs is internal, characters realizing their own flaws and making the change to win the person they want. My only problem is that I really didn’t think Sonny changed. There were some things she opened up to, but for the most part she remained the same. JP on the other hand experienced an uphill battle all the way.

Secondary characters from the first book get a reprisal and there are a couple of introductions to additional baseball players who may get their own romance soon. Plot-wise this book is easy to follow and get involved in, but there’s an absence of deep emotional conflict. Seasons does an excellent job of pacing and I easily believed the relationship progression; even though Sonny was a bit more stubborn then I expected her to be.

Overall, if you’re looking for a sweet romance with some sports, hot bods, and a little shimmy-shake dancing Playing the Field may be the right book for you.
