Review

Andrew Yates is starting to feel the pressure to settle down with a family. His meddling mother is constantly on his case and it doesn’t help that his older brother has a wife and a new baby on the way. There are plenty of women in town but none of them catches his attention like the ‘adventuress’ he has been sleeping with for the last two years. How can he bring home a woman like that?

Wilhemia “Billie” Wells has no problem accepting that she is a whore. Life has not been kind to her but she is doing the best she can to survive. A woman like her don’t have many options in life. When she finds herself pregnant by Drew, she decides to keep the baby, despite her reputation and choice of work. Though she loves Drew, she knows she can’t show up at his door demanding that he takes care of them. She makes a bargain with her pimp and he comes to collect her child but Billie can’t give up her baby. She flees to the only place that she feels can help her.

When Billie shows up at Drew’s house, he is livid. He has finally let Billie go and he founds a new proper lady to marry. Billie and the baby in tow throws Drew for a loop and his fiancĂ© leave him. He is livid and doesn’t want her or the baby in his house but Drew’s mother sees the passion between them and proposes that they get married. Despite their better judgment, Billie and Drew wed.

The core of the story is how Billie and Drew learn to love one another despite all that they have been through. They had a relationship based on lust and passion but now they have to build one on trust and love.

I enjoyed this story but I didn’t love it. There is not much going on in the story despite having a wicked villain. Billie saved this story for me. She is such a great female character. She is bold and honest. She shocked me a few times when she talked about her profession. She is not ashamed to admit who she was. She wants to learn to be a proper lady so that she doesn’t embarrass her husband. When you learn of her background, you really can’t help but to love her.

I am rather conflicted with my feelings for Drew. Initially, the author showed a bit of compassion from Drew. He taught Billie how to read. He showered her with gifts and trips to the Opera. Then when she shows up to his door steps, he turns into a big jerk. I never got into his head. He is cold and distant despite wanting her sexually. He never opened up completely to make me believed he fell for his wife and child.

I was glad to see that Mrs. Yates (Drew’s mother) finally stops fighting her love interest. Naomi and Eli also turned things up in this book. I look forward to reading Noah’s story. His woman is going to be a feisty one.
