Review

He’s been a spy his entire marriage, and his wife never knew… until now.

This is the second full-length novel in Galen’s Spies series, and the first one I’ve picked up. Now to be fair I’d heard good things about the first book, my best friend went ‘ga-ga’ for it and she’s been trying to get me to pick it up for the last 8 months. Being the busy bee I am, I didn’t read the first in the series and opted for a look at this second book. That being said I will now read both Lord and Lady Spy, and the novella, The Spy Wore Blue, as soon as I have a moment to spare.

The story picks up after the events of Lord and Lady Spy, with Agent Baron on a secret mission for information about a notorious murderer, Foncé. The only hitch is that he’s let his wife, Lady Beatrice down once again. His near brush with severe injury and his wife’s sudden defiant attitude make Baron begin to question his relationships with his family and realize that sometimes there are things more important than King and country.

One of my favorite tropes is put to good use in this book, husband and wife reunion. While, they’ve never really been estranged, Wyn’s constant spy mission status essentially put the marriage on the rocks. Beatrice has been too busy raising her daughters to even focus on her own needs, but now with the girls getting older she realizes she’s lonely. For Wyn when he’s just about to lose Beatrice only then does he realize how much he’s been a jerk and more.

Lady Bea is done with being cast aside by her wayward husband Wyn and is currently entertaining the idea of secret liaison with a man claiming to be a spy. Until she finds out her husband is actually the real spy, done with years of being kept in the dark she wants to help, but Wyn has other ideas including seduction.  I love this heroine because she suddenly rids herself of obedience and becomes fun, spontaneous, and brave.

I also loved Wyn’s awakening to his wife’s charms, her beauty, and overall what he’d been missing all these years. Finally the man realizes the truth.

Both characters are admirable, deep, and at times hilarious. I couldn’t put the book down, and if you’re a fan of the movie True Lies, you’ll find some of the situations the couple faces very entertaining indeed. Previous characters from the other books in the spy series also make appearances.

Definitely a great book to kick off the school season with.
