For fans of Sarah Dessen and John Green, How to Love is a breathtaking debut about a couple who falls in love . . . twice.

Before: Reena Montero has loved Sawyer LeGrande for as long as she can remember. But he's never noticed that Reena even exists . . . until one day, impossibly, he does. Reena and Sawyer fall in messy, complicated love. But then Sawyer disappears without a word, leaving a devastated—and pregnant—Reena behind.

After: Almost three years have passed, and there's a new love in Reena's life: her daughter. Reena's gotten used to life without Sawyer, but just as suddenly as he disappeared, he turns up again. Reena wants nothing to do with him, though she'd be lying if she said his being back wasn't stirring something in her.

After everything that's happened, can Reena really let herself love Sawyer LeGrande again?

Review

WOW...that was intense for me...my heart hurts.  I may not have gotten pregnant in high school, but my life had a LOT of similarities to Reena's. I had so many plans for what I wanted to do with my life, where I wanted to go. And Reena did too. And I guess, when you think about it, Sawyer did too, at one point. These characters prove that love can be messy. Love can HURT, big time. But love can also do so many good things. I think it's time we all grow up and take a lesson or two from this book.

This book is told with ‘Before’ and ‘After’ juxtaposed, changing every chapter.  This was the PERFECT way for this story to be told.  It allows for information to be revealed to the reader at JUST the right time!  Katie Cotugno really knows how to keep the reader wanting more…I read this book in one sitting.

Sawyer LeGrande was the boy Reena Montero always wished she could have, but thought was a pipe dream.  That is, until he, seemingly out of nowhere, pursues a relationship with her.  Reena had a relatively happy, promising teenage life.  That is, until she finds out she’s pregnant, and Sawyer skips town without telling anyone where he’s going.

Two years later, Sawyer appears, as if by magic, back in their hometown…and it seems he has no intention of going anywhere.  Reena was just starting to feel like she might be able to move on with her life, with a great guy who is awesome with Hannah.  Now that Sawyer is back in town, Reena starts to feel obligated to at minimum be civil toward Sawyer, because they will forever have Hannah to keep them connected.  This leads to ALL sorts of craziness in their lives.

Will Reena have her chance to move on with her new boyfriend?  Will Sawyer be able to convince Reena that she (and Hannah) should be with him?  Or will everyone end up alone?  You’ll have to read it yourself!
