In the Silver Creek romance Unexpected, Cole Mitchell found love in the last place he ever thought to look. Now, in USA Today bestselling author Maisey Yates’ newest novel, Cole’s little sister Lark is determined to have her turn…

Having never left the family ranch, Lark Mitchell needs a little adventure—or at least a romance that isn’t confined to the internet. Her older brothers Cole and Cade have always been too good at protecting her innocence, but even they can’t stop her from taking a second job—where her boss just so happens to be the kind of bad boy she craves. Too bad he’s also the one guy in Silver Creek she should never touch…

When Quinn Parker introduces himself, Lark tries to quit on the spot. Everyone knows Quinn was behind the accident that ended Cade’s rodeo career. But when he holds her to her contract, she can’t help wanting to get even closer. As she begins to see the man behind the gossip, she sees that not all of the things people say about him are true…even if there’s plenty about this bad boy she has yet to discover.

Review

This is my first chance at reading one of Yates full-length novels, in which she tackles hot cowboys and rodeo. While I missed the novella and first book of this series, I have to say I enjoyed where I came in at. Lark and Quinn take the enemies to lover’s trope to new levels. It’s not my favorite trope, but one I easily enjoy.

I related to Lark from the geek perspective. Being a girl who tends to get lost in electronic devices and stay in an online world for long periods of time, I understood Lark’s hesitance to connect with people beyond that. Her first opportunity to connect has her consorting with the man who may have caused her brother’s accident. How’s that for luck? No matter what though, Lark impressed me with her integrity and willingness to stick it out, even if she finds her body attracted to the one man she shouldn’t be.

Quinn is the true cowboy/bad boy. He hired Lark for all the wrong reason and didn’t expect a girl who has balls of steel and is willing to do right by her contract. Lark gets under his skin as she’s not only hot, but completely unlike the women Quinn’s used to. At first this hero seemed like a real ass and I couldn’t see how he’d redeem himself in the end. Slowly but surely I came around to Quinn. I’m a sucker for bad boys and this bad boy has plenty of past baggage saddled to his horse.

Plus, Quinn steams up any room. The tension and the chemistry between him and Lark were off the charts. Every encounter was unique, built the story, and made everything so much better. If you remember times where you had fun in a truck, Quinn makes those look like child’s play.

The plot was original and provided some strong emotional moments between hero and heroine. There’s also a subplot with Quinn’s friend Sam and his wife, but I didn’t feel like it added anything to the story and would’ve liked a little more Quinn and Lark. I enjoyed reading about Sam and his wife and the tale didn’t lack but it took away from Quinn and Lark’s developing relationship.

Otherwise climatic moments were continuously surprising and left me unable to predict where the story would go or head. If you’ve been reading the other books and you’re hoping to find out who wanted to hurt Lark’s brother Cade, then be prepared for some additional news but not all the answers.

Overall, this is a really good enemy to lover’s story providing some memorable characters and awesome character development. There are twists, turns, and a great ending, along with a sneak peek at the next story Unbroken, Cade’s tale. I can’t wait for it to come out.

For readers who enjoy Victoria Dahl.
