New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Lorraine Heath brings us the eagerly awaited final story in the Scoundrels of St. James series.

William Graves is the last of Feagan's scoundrels. A onetime grave robber turned royal physician, he has devoted his life to saving others—because he knows there is no way to save himself. Especially not around a lady like Winnie. Though undeserving of her touch, he cannot resist. His passion cannot be tamed … even in the face of certain danger.

Winnie, the Duchess of Avendale, never knew peace until her brutal husband died. With William she's discovered burning desire—and the healing power of love. But now, confronted by the past she thought she'd left behind, Winnie must face her fears … or risk losing the one man who can fulfill all her dreams.

Review

Caution readers this is a novella. If you’re expecting the last book in The Scoundrels of St. James series to be full-length novel, guess again.

For me it was a good story, but I was disappointed so much page space was needed to catch me up on what happened previously in the series and make this a standalone. The plot is extremely suspenseful with someone out to hurt Winnie or at least make her insane. Graves wants to remain close to protect her, though his motives are driven by his desire as well as his sense of honor.

Throughout the story, while Graves acts as a hero there are moments when he is a downright scoundrel and I’m surprised how the proper Duchess, Winnie, accepts this behavior. Winnie didn’t take offense to it or at least request Graves to be a bit more courteous in his affections to her. Her actions made me believe in her character a bit less, I didn’t feel her justifications made sense to me or warranted her behavior, especially with the crazy things happening around her house.

Regardless of my feelings towards the heroine, I did love Graves, who was naughty and nice. He could easily drive a woman insane with his ability to be all romance and seduction one minute, and ready for business the next. He definitely performs some heroic feats in the story, but I won’t tell you what they are.

Overall, fans of this series will enjoy the wrap up and getting to see Graves and Winnie attempt to get an HEA. For readers just starting in I would suggest reading the entire series so you can follow along easily though this novella does work as a standalone.
