The Kraken King, Part I
The Kraken King and the Scribbling Spinster

A former smuggler and thief, Ariq—better known as the Kraken King—doesn’t know what to make of the clever, mysterious woman he rescues from an airship besieged by marauders. Unsure if she’s a spy or a pawn in someone else’s game, Ariq isn’t about to let her out of his sight until he finds out…

After escaping her fourth kidnapping attempt in a year, Zenobia Fox has learned to vigilantly guard her identity. While her brother Archimedes is notorious for his exploits, Zenobia has had no adventures to call her own—besides the stories she writes.

But when she jumps at the chance to escape to the wilds of Australia and acquire research for her next story, Zenobia quickly discovers that the voyage will be far more adventurous than any fiction she could put to paper…

Includes a bonus excerpt of Meljean Brook’s The Iron Duke.

Review

I’ve been waiting for this story for over year. When I heard it would be a serial I nearly died. A new piece of the puzzle each week…woe is me!

Then I got the chance to review it. Note: I probably sent half a dozen texts and told everyone I worked with how I was getting the opportunity to read The Kraken King before the mass public. Not all of it, but it was worth it for the first 3 parts.

Now, as a whole this story is just getting started and there is so much of everything I ever loved about Brook’s writing and her steampunk world bundled up into this story. Let’s cover off on the overall bits first.

World building in the Iron Seas universe never ends. Each new story comes with new pieces of the puzzle, different cultures, weapons, foods, tastes, sounds, smells. I honestly could stand to read each part again just to fully submerse myself in all the added extras. The variety is fun and inspires my own dreams of creating a world unto itself one day. Action never ceases. If you like fights, skirmishes and the possibility of loss of life then The Kraken King will definitely answer that call of adventure and risk.  Alpha males and strong heroines are required. As usually Brook’s delivers a two tough characters, which you have to be to survive in this harsh steampunk world, I couldn’t be more excited.

Part 1

This first part, like other stories in the series, starts off a little slow. That’s right, good things come to those who wait, but after I got through the first chapter I was reminded how much I loved this world.

My favorite line: This was far more adventure than she’d hoped for. She’d only wanted to see a little danger from a distance. Instead she’d fallen straight into the clutches of the Kraken King.

For me, this first little tidbit is the mere appetizer, or partial appetizer before getting to bite off a bigger piece. The little hints of a larger story barely begin to emerge and for all I knew our lovely heroine, Zenobia, is simply running through the same sort of issue she’s been having for a while—avoiding being kidnapped.

But wait there’s more…
