BECAUSE YOU’RE MINE
Lisa Kleypas
Avon reissue

This month, Avon Books reissued one of my absolute favourite Lisa Kleypas historical romances, BECAUSE YOU’RE MINE.

Sigh. This is one of those books I have both in print and digital format. The print copy had to be replaced several years ago when the pages became dog-eared and started falling out due to over use.

The plot is one of those tried and true tropes where the heroine is determined to ruin herself to avoid marrying an aging lord. After hearing scandalous things about Logan Scott, an actor and a well-known notorious womanizer, Madeline Matthews decides he will more than do for a torrid affair. That should ruin her good and proper.

But Logan Scott isn’t all he appears to the outside world. He’s a private man dealing with his own demons and betrayals. To say he had a horrid childhood would be understating the matter. His parents were wretched to him and the only solace he had in his young life was his friendship with Andrew, heir to the Earl of Rochester (truly a frightful man!).

Well you can imagine Logan’s surprise to be literally propositioned by Madeline. She’s innocent, that’s her first offense. She’s also young and it’s obvious she’s quality. She’s beautiful and charming, which makes the whole ordeal of keeping her at arm’s length not just a chore, but an exercise in self-control. Logan Scott is, after all, only a man.

So succumb he does. And that’s when everything but the kitchen sink hits the fan. Not because he’s taken an innocent to his bed but because he’s fallen in love and only then does he discover the real reason she sought him out for an affair.

Oh the angst. I so love angst, and Logan and Madeline’s love story had enough to angst up three more books. He has his pride and wants nothing to do with her after that but fate intervenes and he has no choice but to deal with her. And if I thought the sexual tension between them had reached fever pitch when she was chasing him, Ms. Kleypas managed–I know not how–to raise it another notch in the aftermath of her ‘discovery’.

If you like dark and brooding heroes, you will swoon and sigh over Logan Scott. Because underneath his cold and gruff exterior, he is a man brimming with heart felt emotions. When he loves, he loves deeply. And I’m not just talking about the love he tries to squelch for Madeline, but the love he has for his good friend, Andrew, and Julia (of Somewhere I’ll Find You).

Madeline is dogged in her pursuit of him and deals with him patiently, even as he rejects her love at every turn. But even she has her limits and it’s when she finally reaches hers that we reach the climax of the story.

Needless to say, this is a sexy, heart wrenching, tension-wrought, emotional read. Definitely one of Lisa Kleypas’s best. From me it gets the 5 Star Chart Topper rating. It’s not only worth a read, but it deserves to be read over and over again.

So today, I’m giving away a copy to anyone who hasn’t enjoyed this one yet. Comment and let me me know which writer or which book has elicited that emotional intensity that makes your heart ache.

  1. I love Lisa Kleypas, especially some of the older ones (Wallflowers & prior) This one sounds soo good and I don’t remember reading it yet. I’m glad that some of these older books are being reissued.

To answer your question, the books that seem to stay with me and remain favorites are the ones that I have a strong emotional connection with, so I’m glad to hear that Because Your Mine is along the lines of the types of books I like to read. Some of my favorites have been Outlander by Diana Gabaldon, Addicted by Charlotte Featherstone was another, and I really loved Courtney Milan’s Turner series. These are just a few that come to mind, obviously there are many others 🙂

  2. I love Lisa Kleypas she is one of my all time favorite authors. I reread her books all the time.

  3. I too love dark men in the books I read and I have said this before Broken Wing from Judith James is one of the best. But I have to say in real life I would never want a man like that. Way to much work. LOL! I have read all of Lisa Kleypas’s books, but some how I missed this one. I would really love to win this, but if not I will be buying it.

  4. Lisa Kleypas is such a great writer, I love both her historicals and contemporaries. This post made me realize how long it’s been since I’ve read one of her book. Can’t wait for Rainshadow Road. I haven’t read Because You’re Mine yet but look forward to it. I am most definitely drawn to stories richly emotional and intense and I find this in many of Brenda Joyce and Melody Thomas’s books.

  5. I’ve never read this book by Lisa Kleypas….I do have a couple of her books in my tbr but I’m OCD about reading books in a series i order and I still have to get a couple more so that I can start them…Thanks for the giveaway!

  6. I just recently started reading Lisa Kleypas–what took me so long?? I’d love to add this new old book of hers to my collection. 😀

  7. I don’t know if it was emotional intensity or just the craftsmanship of their stories, but Remembrance by Jude Deveraux and LaVyrle Spencer’s Morning Glory are ones that have always stuck with me. Not bad for books I read 15-20 years ago.

  8. I have read most of Kleypas’ historicals but not this one! (And I am glad to see her older works being reissued since it appears she no longer cares to write historical romance novels.) A recent read that I found incredibly emotional and that really stuck with me for weeks after I finished is Susanna Kearsley’s “The Winter Sea”.

  9. I love Lisa Kleypas, but haven’t read this one yet. My favorite of hers–which is a heart-stopper for me–is a contemporary, Smooth-Talking Sranger. A couple I’ve read this year that had that same influence on me are Julie Anne Long’s What I Did for a Duke and Courtney Milan’s Unveiled. Such perfect books! Thanks for the giveaway.

  10. I read this ages ago from the library. It’s one of LK’s best books.

Judith McNaught’s earlier books had high emotional intensity. Her characters (and readers) are always put through the wringer until they finally achieve their HEA.

  11. I haven’t read this one but I’m a big fan of Lisa’s work! Nalini Singh is definitely an author who has elicited some strong emotions from me with her characters and writing, where you cry along or smile with them in the story.

  12. One of my favorite Kleypas books is an oldie but goodie, LOVE COME TO ME (also recently reissued) set in post Civil War Massachusetts w/a southerner for a hero and a shelter Northern miss as the heroine. Lisa is one of those authors that brings such immense emotional depth that you can’t help but get sucked in from the start. Two words for you: Derek Craven. Sigh.

  13. I can’t believe I haven’t read her yet!! I have to say any of the older Kathleen Woodiwiss books or Julie Garwood’d – I totally connect with her characters.

  14. I haven’t read any of Lisa’s books yet, but I have read so much about her that I will have to get some of them. I have read so many books over the years that have really struck home, but can’t seem to remember which ones they are. I tend to buy my favorite authors or new authors I hear about, so I am never disappointed in any of the books I read. I guess I will say that some of the Kathleen Woodiwess, Rosemary Rogers, Nicole Jordan, and Sabrina Jeffries books have left a lasting impression on me.

  15. I LOVE this book, heck I love any historical from Lisa Kleypas! I also have a worn, dog eared, tea stained copy, so enter me to win! I need a replacement!

  16. 🙁 Sadly I haven’t read any of Lisa Kleypas books, and it looks like I’m adding this book to my list. Slowly I’ve increased my Romance authors list. Just today, I purchased “Until There Was You” by Kristan Higgins. My most emotional two book I’ve ever cried over…(yes dad, if your reading this, I did break down and cried over a book, even though I said I would never) lol… It was Richelle Mead — Vampire Academy series –Book 2 –“Frostbite.” I cried like a baby when Mason had died. Then in Book 6, same series –“The Last Sacrifice,” once again, but worse, I cried when Adrian had finally found love, only to have his heart broken. I hurt for weeks after I read this book.

    1. Whoops! Another typo. (Your should be you’re ) lol! That’s what I get for reliving those emotional book memories… 😀

  17. I loved this book. Just thinking about Logan Scott gives me butterflies in the tummy. I definitely need to buy and re-read this story because I honestly think this if my favorite Kleypas book and I’m completely in love with Logan.

  18. While I love Kleypas’ historicals & have read many, I haven’t had a chance to read this one yet even though it’s “on the wish list”. Most recent read that pulled at my emotions would be Joanna Bourne’s The Black Hawk — to have seen bits of Adrian & Justine’s story in the 3 prior books it was great to finally get their story completely told all the way through to the HEA finally 🙂 I thought it was a fab read and lived up to the expectations that had built due to the waiting.

  19. I havent read any books by Lisa Kleypas yet…but this book looks interesting. I would love to get started reading her books though. Winning one would be great. but if not, then i am defintly buying it. 🙂

  20. I have not read this one. The only Kleypas book I’ve read is Suddenly You, and I really enjoyed it. I’m heading over to Amazon to get a sample for my Kindle.

  21. Of Lisa Kleypas’s works, the story I read over and over is Again the Magic. It always makes me cry. (It’s also the book I recommend to friends who want to start reading Kleypas.)

Another heartbreaker and tearjerker is Sherry Thomas’s Private Arrangements. The first time I read it, I stayed up really late and was sniffling and sobbing through the story.

  22. Ihave not read too many books by Lisa. The one that I like to read over is Ransom by Julie Garwood.

  23. I haven’t had a chance to read this book yet. I’ve really enjoyed the books I have read by Lisa Kleypas, but I know she has quite a back list that I’ve missed.

  24. I have not yet read this book, but it has just jumped to the top ranks of my Wish List. Angst and a sense of humor are two of my favorite things to find in a story. The first book I read that gripped my heart was a long time ago about a duke who marries a vicar’s daughter, she miscarries and they grow apart. He heads back to London to see his former mistress and realizes he still loves and wants his wife. She in the meantime realizes she has been too withdrawn and driven him off. She follows him to London and finds him at dinner with the mistress right after he has decided to go back and work things out. She sees them together and flees. I have no idea who the author is or what the title is, but I think I still have it around here somewhere.
There have been older books by Julie Garwood, Kathleen Woodiwiss, and Kat Martin that have had some good gripping scenes in them.

  25. I can’t believe I haven’t read that one!! I love her books, she’s one of those authors I pick up without even looking at more than her name on the cover if I don’t own it yet.

There are so many books that pull me in and become emotionally wrenching for me, and for so many different reasons. Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers was the first big one for me. One that I still hold very dear.

  26. I haven’t read this book .. but now I want to REALLY want to read it.
It sounds amazing, a book I loved because it moved me to tears and later made me feel I reached the top of a mountain is Ashley March’s Seducing The Duchess. Fabulous read for sure 😀

  27. I have not read BECAUSE YOU’RE MINE. I was trying to recall a book that gripped me so tight I could not forget. I don’t believe I have yet read a book that made my heart ache. So, yes please!!

  28. I am sorry to say I have not read Lisa’s books before but do have a couple of her on my TBR pile, they are older books must get them out and read them. Bought them in a used book store.

  29. Great review, this book looks really good! I’ve never read this one. I did read DREAMING OF YOU and I loved it! 🙂

  30. I love the wall flower series. They were the first books of Lisa’s that I read and will always be my favorite.

  31. Sounds Fabulous. I enjoy her books. Elizabeth Lowell’s books frequently bring me to tears. A Woman Without Lies Angel’s story!!

  32. Lisa always make me sad especilally “prince of dreams” with her story of love the relives it self after hundreds of years and it really is forever i also love her Wallflowers series it made me laugh and cry she is a great writer. i like julia quinn because she always makes you laugh i just finish reading “how to catch a heiress”she just cracks me yo with her straving half the charecters by their servents. i also like StephineLaurens for her Cynersters books.

  33. Most recently, I read “How to Bake a Perfect Life” by Barbara O’Neal (Barbara Samuel) and that really socked me one. I don’t read a lot of contemporaries, and I typically avoid books set in the present tense, but I adored that book and it teared me up on multiple occasions. It wasn’t really the relationship between the main character and her love, but the rest of the story. It was very sad but still really awesome.

Romance-wise, off the top of my head, I can’t think of any that I found so genuinely awesome that they affected me emotionally in the way that you describe this book. I have many favorites, but not for reasons like this. However, I do like books like this, so either way I’m putting this in my TBR pile. 🙂

  34. Just hearing you describe this book, the heartache, the feelings of betrayal, the passion…I MUST put this on my TBR list! I have never read a Kleypas book, I know I know I hear the gasps. And I honestly have not even looked into them even though I know she is a very popular author. You sold me on this one though!

The Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon is one that makes my heart ache. If you haven’t read it you are missing out. To be thrown back in time and find the other half of your soul, only to be forced to leave and rip that part of yourself away is truly heart wrenching. The emotional highs and lows!!! Love it!

Thanks for the generosity of giving away this book, either way thanks for introducing me to a potentially great book!

  35. I’ve already read it, but yes, this is a lovely angsty one! Other authors that give me that wonderful gut-punch — Mary Balogh, Sherry Thomas, Teresa Medeiros.

  36. I love Lisa’s work. Everything she writes is outstanding. I have a 1997 edition of this book but, believe it or not, I have not read it yet. Sigh….I have so many books on my TBR shelves, it amazes even me that I can let one of my favorite author’s work go unread! Would love to have a brand new copy!
