Review ❤ The Gun Runner by Scott Hildreth

August 15, 2016

Tripp

Once, I took down terrorists on the front lines as a marine.
Now I’m in the business of bad.
I’ve sold guns to people others might not approve of.
I’ve eliminated the criminals, the lowlifes and the thugs who’ve tread on my turf.
And I looked the Sicilian Mafia boss in the eye and told him to f*** off.
No one tells me no, unless it’s their last word.
I didn’t just act the part of bad—I lived it. Then she stumbled into my life.
I tried to stay away from her. Tried focusing on moving my merchandise. But one smile from Terra was like a shot to the heart.
She’s mine now. And no one threatens what’s mine.

Terra

I’ve seen a lot of terrible things in my life.
I grew up around lies and deception, and I ran away from all of them.
Until I met him.
I knew he was corrupt. I knew he was dangerous.
I should have stayed away, but my attraction to him, my need for him, overrode my logic.
Now I love him.
If he finds out who I am, we’re done and I’ll be nothing.
I never wanted to be the Mafia princess they tried to make me, but mia familia had other plans. And what mia familia wants…it gets.
Only Michael Tripp can save me.

Michael Tripp
is a former marine now living his life as a gun runner. He meets Italian princess, Terra, at a local coffee shop when her abusive ex-boyfriend drags her out. Tripp could never let a damsel down so he steps into rescue her. Their brief encounter stays on both their minds and the next time they meet, neither one of them hesitate to act on their desires.

Tripp is described as a hard, bad-ass man but I never fully felt that. He does have a few moments when he has to kick some butt. It is not shown but rather told to readers but I couldn’t connect with how it was done. I like my male characters to be strong, independent alphas, and I’m not quite sure where Tripp falls into that category.

On the other hand, I did enjoy Terra and wanted to get to know her better. The author does a good job introducing the characters in the series, but the development falls a bit short. I guess I’m confused about Terra’s relationship with her family. She is the daughter of a mob boss but her dad has no clue of her relationship with Tripp?

The plot is a bit unrealistic as Tripp doesn’t find out who she really is. I find it hard to believe that neither Tripp nor Cap would fully investigate her. She told him that she was a shoe store owner who works from home? What in the world? He even repeated it doubtfully and he still doesn’t look into it? I feel as part of the story is missing and I have to chalk it up to this being the first book of a series.

Overall, though I’m still on the fence with this book, I want to know what happens next. The ending left open many possibilities and there are plenty of issues that need to be resolved. Maybe the readers will get a better sense of what is going on with the characters.
