Darkness at Dawn

Heat Level: 2 (Mild)

A LIFE DESTROYED

Nobody knows better than Lucy Merritt what duty can cost. Her CIA operative parents gave their lives for a mission in the Himalayan Kingdom of Nhala, and as a result, Lucy was determined to make a safe and comfortable life for herself, becoming an expert restorer of manuscripts.

A LIFE OF SERVICE

Captain Mike Shafer, Tenth Mountain Division, US Army, is dedicated to keeping his country safe. Intel from a dead CIA operative in Nhala points to a deadly threat that could wipe out entire populations. When Lucy is called to Nhala to restore the manuscript of an ancient prophesy, it’s his chance to stop the threat cold. He is ready and willing to put himself on the firing line—only not with the beautiful woman who’s been assigned to him. No matter how smart she is, she’s a tempting distraction.

A LIFE REBORN

Now Mike and Lucy must learn to work together to stop this global threat. Mike thought he understood courage, but when she does the bravest thing he’s ever seen, he vows to carry a badly wounded Lucy across a frozen wasteland to save this magnificent woman—and the world.

Darkness at Dawn is a fantastic romantic suspense full of political intrigue, action, and love.

Lucy Merritt had a tumultuous childhood and has now found a calm, organized place in life. She works as an art restorer and spends her time in the apartment she has made into a haven – far from the places she lived as a child with her CIA parents. Lucy is such a complex character. She is strong and able to deal with just about anything that comes her way, but she is also vulnerable and alone. I loved that there were two sides to her and that neither was really a weakness.

Captain Mike Shafer is diehard defender of our country. He has served in many places and has the training to withstand anything.  He is tough and doesn’t allow anything to get in the way of the mission…until Lucy.

Darkness at Dawn is such a well written book and moves at such a pace that I couldn’t put it down. There is an instant attraction between Lucy and Mike and it is fantastic.  I loved Mike’s inner dialogue as he struggled with his attraction to Lucy and his duty to country.

For example:

What did the damned woman use as perfume? Mike thought, gritting his teeth. Pheromones?

He had to stiffen his neck muscles so he wouldn’t turn his head to stare at her. He’d been in the mountains way too long and had spent way too much time with his men. There was nothing good to look at with his men. In fact, a lot of them were butt-ugly.

Lucy Merritt was the opposite. Everything about her fascinated him, as if he’d never seen a woman before.

The main plot of the book is Lucy and Mike’s mission to learn about bioweapons that are being made and implemented in an attack on the US, Israel, and India. There is a lot of political backstabbing and maneuvering that keeps the action moving quickly. A subplot has to do with the royal family of Nhala and Lucy’s connection to them from the past. Darkness At Dawn is full of twists and turns that will keep the reader engaged and guessing if everything is going to turn out alight for Lucy and Mike.

This is the perfect book to read when you are in the mood for something dangerous, action-packed, and romantic.
