One Night Scandal
Christie Kelley
Heat Level: 4 (Hot)

With the scandalous nature of her birth to live down, Isabella Fairmont dreams of a proper marriage—even if a passionless one. She saves her deepest desires for the novel she dares to pen, wherein a handsome lord with dark powers seduces her. But then her courtship with an appropriate suitor is threatened by the sudden attentions of the reclusive Earl of Black…whose pale blue eyes and brooding sensuality are exactly as she described in her book.

Isabella tries to resist the mysterious Earl of Black. Yet as he pursues her, with inexplicable knowledge of her past and kisses that consume her, Isabella fears she will succumb.

If only the earl could tell Isabella the truth. With very real, and treacherous, thieves endangering her life, Black will need to protect Isabella from the very people she trusts the most…

One Night Scandal is the final installment of Christie Kelley’s Spinster Club series. If you have read the previous Spinster books then you know where the last book, Scandal of the Season, left off; with the disappearance of one, Miss Sophie Reynard.

One Night Scandal starts with our psychically capable Sophie in the romantic city of Venice. Having matched all her Spinster Club friends with their true loves, Sophie seeks to find her own. An accident literally throws her into the arms of a man that will ignite her passions and the longing to be more than the bastard daughter of an Earl.

The Marquess of Ancroft, Nicholas desperately wants to find the woman he spent one passionate night with in Venice. When his search leads him to Sophie, he immediately finds himself prepared to surrender everything in the hopes of making her his wife, secrets and circumstances of birth be damned! But can he convince the wary medium that he is the one for her or will he be thwarted at his every turn.

I have eagerly devoured each of Christie Kelley’s Spinster Club books. The stories of each lady finding their true love, through unconventional means, are enjoyable and hot! So I was a little disappointed when One Night Scandal did not produce the mysterious intrigue and usual villainous conflict that the previous books held. While the character’s are still engaging, the romance and sensuality actively present, the overall plot seemed to hold on only to Sophie’s inability to think rationally about her own future and a sudden tendency to over react. This posed a problem for me as Sophie’s character was an intelligent matchmaker in the previous books, though Kelley gives a somewhat plausible explanation for Sophie’s continuous misunderstandings and rushed decisions.

However you get an opportunity to interact with all the characters from the previous books, including the brooding Somerton and the original ‘Ice Queen’ spinster Avis Copley. The appearance of these characters and the scandalous actions of Nicholas’ father give the story some life. Ultimately, it’s a good read, and well written.  I just wish that the story would have shown a little more of a challenge when it came to the conflict.
