Bad Girl By Night
Lacey Alexander
Heat Level: 6 (Erotic)

A steamy new series that will have fans on lockdown.

Meet the H.O.T. cops, a group of alpha males trained in law enforcement-but naturally skilled at the art of pleasure.

The people of Turnbridge, Michigan, see Carly Winters as the respectable-yet painfully single- good girl. None of them knows what she does miles away, where she becomes Desiree, a seductress who lures men into nights of heated passion.

Until the day she's introduced to the new cop in town-Jake, one of the men who fulfilled her darkest fantasy. His arrival turns her safe world upside down. Carly's good and bad girl personas clash, and she must decide who she needs to be...

Carly is a good girl from a small town, except for one night every few weeks when she goes into the city to prowl. She picks up a man, has her crazy, sexy way with them, and then returns to her real life. Except when she meets Jake and Colt, her worlds collide, because the formerly anonymous encounter with a handsome stranger now becomes her wild past with her small town’s newest police officer. But Jake and Carly share more than just one wild night, and as they discover the layers of their past, they discover what might keep them apart forever, or could make them soulmates.

It’s always tempting for authors to use the easy way out for why two people can’t be together, and I’ve seen more than my fair share of badly written plotlines that include a victim of sexual assault, molestation, or incest. So when this storyline started heading in that direction, I’ll admit some skepticism. As an assault survivor, I know that, yes, it affects my sex life. I also know that it affects the way I relate to men. I’ve rarely seen it treated in a way that touches me, emotionally, or that doesn’t make me want to throw the book across the room. But I was impressed with the way Lacey Alexander handled this topic, from both directions.

This book had me alternately laughing, crying, hoping, and fuming. But it was quite the emotional ride. I’ll admit to some disbelief toward the end of the book; the resolution of the hero’s conflict was just too easy, in my opinion. Overall though, it was well-written and well-executed. The chemistry between the main characters was hot, the minor characters were interesting and added to the flow of the book, and the general plot trajectory was good.

Quite possibly the most important piece of the reading experience for me was that it felt like a unique twist on something I’ve seen done a lot. It also felt very true-to-life to the response of an assault victim. Yes, there were pieces that felt forced, but in general, I was impressed with Lacey Alexander’s writing and character development. I’ll be reading more of her books in the future.
