DEVIL IN DISGUISE, the debut historical romance by Stefanie Sloane, is a tale of adventure and true love.
Lord William Randall, also known as Iron Will, is a rake. Rake is actually a mild term for what Will is – he drinks, gambles, and spends a lot of time with the ladies. He’s also part of a spy organization known as the Young Corinthians. He is put in charge of watching over Lady Lucinda Grey after a kidnapping plot is uncovered.
Lady Lucinda Grey is a headstrong, beautiful, smart woman who knows what and who she wants. She doesn’t believe that love and marriage is for her, but her best friend thinks it is and spends her time fixing Lucinda up with the eligible men of the ton. Will is nowhere on her list of suitors, but there is something about him the intrigues Lucinda from the moment their eyes meet.
These two are fantastic together. From the moment they see each other there is a definite spark and it only gets hotter between the two. Lucinda and Will both have their reasons for courting each other, but they don’t expect to really fall in love.
I enjoyed this book. The couple is fantastic and the romance spot on. My only complaint is the plot itself. Someone has set out to kidnap Lucinda and not just any someone, but a notorious French murderer. I never understood why someone had hired him to kidnap Lucinda. She was an extremely wealthy woman and a ransom would have been paid, but the hunt for her seemed a little excessive for just money. I also felt that, although Will was with Lucinda to protect her and didn’t want to frighten her, Will should have told Lucinda what was happening. There is one scene where he “forbids” her to go riding in the morning, but doesn’t explain why he wants her to stop her early morning rides. Lucinda is a smart character and if the threat had been explained to her she would have understood.
THE DEVIL IN DISGUISE is well written and the characters are fantastic. I will definitely be reading the next two books in this series – THE ANGEL IN MY ARMS (6/28) and THE SINNER WHO SEDUCED ME (7/26)
