I’ve titled this post the Fall/Winter Project but it’s really more of a challenge–at least for me it is. I think we all have pretty full plates with work, child rearing, writing (some of us) etc, so the prospect of adding one more thing to do on our to-do list is daunting–at least for me it is. But I find knitting relaxing. I love that I can knit and still do other things like watch my beloved Mad Men or listen to music or talk on the phone (hands-free of course).
Anyway, I’ve narrowed down my project to three sweaters. To bring everyone up to speed, I’ve invited all my visitors (those who can or want to learn to knit) to join me in knitting something, anything this Fall and Winter. Pictures of finished projects will be displayed on the blog in February and the winner (who you will get to choose) will receive a nice collection of current releases.
Okay, so here is where I need your help. I’m going to knit a cable knit sweater for my son. I’ve narrowed the patterns down to the three below. Which one do you think I should knit?

Since this project was in celebration of Debbie Macomber’s Lifetime Achievement Award and her love of knitting, it’s only fitting that I give away one of her books. All commenters will be entered to win a copy of MRS MIRACLE.
My mother-in-law was a wonderful knitter but she lived in another state so although I taught myself to do afgans, I never mastered a sweater. My husband had a collection of sweaters and and fisherman pattern looks just like one he had (he no longer could fit into them so they got passed on). I’m sure your son will enjoy his!!
I just love to knit. I haven’t tried a sweater yet. Looks kinda of hard. I like to knit lots of hats and socks. I just love cables though. Who would of thought that one of the most beautiful knitting techniques came from a mistake.
I really fishermen knit.
That’s a wonderful project.
I’ve started a project too, but it has nothing to do with knitting. I love to cross stitch, so I have started to cross stitch Christmas cards. I have a few motives done already and I plan on setting them all out and taking a pic before sending them out.

I don’t knit I don’t have the patience to do so. I love the fishermans choice though.
I’ve always want to knit. I’ve watched my roomate knit in college but just never had the patience then lol but maybe now I’ll try. But a sweater seems a bit for me to attempt for my first go, so maybe a scarf lol. BUt I like the cable knit… I always love a good cable knit.
You knit too?! How do you find the time, lol.
I don’t know how to knit but I can crochet. I would love to jump in this one. The first choice was the one I liked.
I’m looking to take a beginning knitting class in either September or October…seeing your sweater ideas is making me look forward to it even more! I decided I needed a craft hobby like knitting or crocheting I can take with me traveling…I can’t really take my sewing projects with me on the road/plane!
I have to admit i don’t know how to knit. Would love to learn, but i have no-one to teach me. I have say though that the fisherman pattern is really calling to me.
I like the fisherman pattern. I wish I could knit. 🙂
@JWZ1978
I love sewing and crocheting too! Maybe in the spring I’ll sew myself a dress. I still have boxes upon boxes of patterns.
I learned to knit and crochet when I was young. The crocheting stuck, but not the knitting – I’m just not very good at it. I love the front facing cable knit, hope you choose that one.
The fisherman’s knit is beautiful, but looks like lots of work. Are you going to take time off from The Season? Or, will it be a project for when he turns much older?
We just returned from Ireland and they still sell them. My best friend gave me me one in “68 and I still have it.
Good luck with your project, Bev. 🙂
Good luck on the project! I’m sure your son will love whichever you choose.
I’ve got a project of my own.. planning my wedding! My boyfriend proposed a couple weeks ago the night before my birthday 😀 I’ve got two years to plan though, which should be plenty of time to plan and save!
@Bonnie
Oh wow, CONGRATULATIONS!!! How fun.
I really like the front facing cable knit. The middle one would be more for a girl. Perhaps it’s just the color that makes me feel that way but it’s also a short body… And the collar is not as pretty as the one on front facing cable knit.
I really like to knit myself but have difficulty staying focused if its a complicated pattern and this one looks challanging. So …. Good Luck! and I’m sure it will turn out great.
You are a lady of many talents, Bev !! Like the fisherman pattern and so will your son. You have to be very careful when choosing a pattern for young men. They always want to look masculine and the fisherman is the most masculine looking pattern. I can’t wait to see your work. I haven’t knitted in years. I used to quilt and cross stitch too, but now my every spare moment is spent writing. Maybe I will pick up a knitting project to keep me for focused!
Congratulations, Bonnie!!
Why don’t you let your son pick the pattern? If he is a teen, I think the last photo would be suitable.
All three patters look challenging!
@Joye
He’s 7. Has zero opinion right now about clothes.
the Aran (Fisherman) Pattern
I love the fisherman pattern! And I so do not knit, but I LOVE my big, soft sweaters. I embroidered some when I was young, but I haven’t done it in years. My down town leads me to photography or sketching. 🙂 I can’t wait to see what everyone ends up with though! 🙂
That would be down TIME not down town . . . zheesh, can y’all tell it’s Friday at the end of the work day? lol. 😉
I wish I could knit, I don’t think my arthritic hands could take it though, and I have no talent for these kinds of projects. I love Debbie Macomber’s books, would love to win a copy.
I like the Aran Fisherman sweater.
I can’t knit but nothing says warmth, comfort and love like a knitted sweater.
Knitting is one of those things I have wanted to learn for a while and I’m hoping this winter I will have some time to devote to it. I picked the fisherman sweater because I think they look so warm.
I haven’t knit in years and never made a sweater but I love the look of the Fisherman design. I’ve been wanting to start knitting again and I think this fall is the perfect time to start. Good Luck with the sweater.
I always thought knitting looked so hard to do. I learned to crochet a baby blanket pattern, but only memorized the steps from my mom and never learned to read directions for doing so. The fisherman’s sweater looks so typical for knitting patterns and I love it!
I like Debbie M.’s “Yarn” stories. They’re so good and warm—like all of Debbie’s books.
@Beverly & @LouisaCornell
Thanks! 🙂
I really like the Aran Fisherman Pattern! I guess that choice is unanimous here! 🙂 It looks gorgeous, and all warm and comfy and cozy!
I wish I knew how to knit but unfortunately I haven’t got a clue.
And please don’t enter me in the Debbie Macomber “Mrs. Mircale” contest. I already have this wonderful book!
The Fisherman is the classic and looks the best especially on a guy.
I don’t knit very well yet but my older sister is teaching me how to. She was able to learn from a friend of her’s and my sister loves to make things for everyone for the holidays. I know that she too would go for the fishermens knit. She made one for our dad and he loved it, matter of fact he was wearing it when he passed away. Kept him so warm.
Those are all pretty. I really like the fisherman one.
I voted for the 3rd photo. I think it looks more like an American boy of 7 would wear. As much as we all like the traditional Fisherman’s Knit, IMHO I think he would reject that style. I do know how to knit but I don’t have the patience for it so I never really got too involved in it.
BTW Beverley….thanks for turning me on the the Goodreads book giveaways. I just joined Goodreads about 2 weeks ago and didn’t know they had giveaways until I saw your widget. I won a book the first day after entering several! Talk about beginner’s luck! Maybe I’ll get lucky again and win a copy of your book too! LOL
Speaking from one who is a crafts enthusiast, I do admire those that can knit. For a beginner project I chose a shawl, and it ended up being a throw for the couch. LOL, it was that big!
I like the fisherman sweater. Its classic and never goes out of style.
Good luck with the sweater. I wish I could knot. I tried to teach myself, but it was while I was living in the jungle and noone knew how to help me.
What a multi-talented woman you are, Bev!
I don’t knit, but I quilt. Can I join your project challenge with the quilt I’m making my new nephew?
@Katrina
ABSOLUTELY!!!
Excellent. I have to work over Christmas, so I’m consoling myself with promises of having a crafty winter. Posting photos in Feb will help motivate me!
I knit but I’m still a scarf knitter. I’ve made a few shawls but scarves are relatively quick and I get to try new patterns. I’ll be knitting starting here pretty quick. I have some Christmas gifts to start.
Oh I wish Im learned to knit. It seems to me it would be the perfect way to relax next to reading. 🙂
I love the Fisherman’s knit but for a boy I might choose the Front Facing knit. I ‘m going to learn how to knit though. I sew really well but I think knitting would be great.
