I missed the first book in this series, and I have plans to play catch up. This book is filled with diverse characters, a great play on brother’s best friend and fake engagement tropes, and a storyline that’s poignant without the cliché. Additionally, Sosa has some of the most natural dialogue I’ve read in a contemporary; the back and forth flows seamlessly.
Julian is the agent for Ashley’s big brother, Carter. She’s had a crush on Julian forever and her latest crash and burn with a roommate gives her the perfect chance just to see if there is any spark. Julian doesn’t want to screw up things with his biggest client, not for something like sex. But with these two sparks fly and between living together, her brother’s surprise wedding and shared interests what should just be a scratching an itch easily turns into something more.
Sosa provides plenty of laughs, emotion, and a story of two people trying to figure out their own future’s while falling in love at the same time. What started for me as reading chapter one before bedtime quickly delved into five chapters and counting toward midnight… I could not get enough. The tropes themselves, the secondary characters, the modern issues popping up in the external challenges of characters all hit home run out of the ball park.
My only hesitance involved Ashley’s character arc. I felt she needed to have as much of a grand gesture as Julian performed. Some of her physical actions helped represent that, but I felt words would have cemented things. In this case, Julian appeared to do most of the heavy lifting, though the fact he knows his woman so well as to understand her without a gesture or a dozen words is also impressive.
I highly recommend this series for readers who enjoy Tracey Livesay’s Shades of Love series.
