He’s been a bad, bad rake—and it takes a governess to teach him a lesson
The accidental governess
After her livelihood slips through her fingers, Alexandra Mountbatten takes on an impossible post: transforming a pair of wild orphans into proper young ladies. However, the girls don’t need discipline. They need a loving home. Try telling that to their guardian, Chase Reynaud: duke’s heir in the streets and devil in the sheets. The ladies of London have tried—and failed—to make him settle down. Somehow, Alexandra must reach his heart . . . without risking her own.
The infamous rake
Like any self-respecting libertine, Chase lives by one rule: no attachments. When a stubborn little governess tries to reform him, he decides to give her an education—in pleasure. That should prove he can’t be tamed. But Alexandra is more than he bargained for: clever, perceptive, passionate. She refuses to see him as a lost cause. Soon the walls around Chase’s heart are crumbling . . . and he’s in danger of falling, hard.

Ms. Dare never fails to write a witty and engaging historical romance. One of the best in the game!
Alexandra Mountbatten first met Charles Reynaud in one of her most embarrassing moments. The connection was immediate but unfortunately after seeing him a year and a half later, he doesn’t recognize her. In fact, he wants to hire her as the new Governess for the children in his care.
Charles finds Alex to be one of the most interesting women he has ever met. She is supposed to care for his wards but he wants her attention all for himself. Being the heir of a dukedom is proving to be most challenging but fighting his attraction to Alex is bound to break him.
First, I have to admit that I was scared that the children would take over the story. In some ways they did but they blended in so nicely. I loved every one of Millicent’s death. You have to read the story to know what I’m referring to. Each time Chase had to give the eulogy, I died of laughter. This is Ms. Dare’s sense of humor shining through. Even though you know that the story behind Millicent’s death will break you, she gives you a laugh along the way.
He cares so much for those girls despite him proclaiming not to. This was one of the issues I did have with his character. Chase is initially described as a rake and a rogue. Every single action said he is an upstanding guy. It is such the contradiction to what the author described him as. I get that once Alex moved in he would calm down but he was never revved up in my opinion. He is just scared of feelings and Alex called him out on every chance that she got.
Alex is such a fun character. Her interactions with her friends are just hilarious. They couldn’t wait for her to fall in love with Bookshop Rake. She has such an interesting background story. I am more curious about Penny and Nicola.
I can’t wait for the next book in the series. Ms. Dare has definitely rekindled my affinity for historical romances.
