“I don’t want to complicate the situation any more than it is already.”

Which was the truth. All he wanted was to protect his daughter. She needed stability and normalcy, something a celebrity parent couldn’t provide. Haylee deserved parents who wanted and loved her, and as the status of his marriage plainly indicated—divorce: pending—the only person she’d get that from was him.

“It won’t. I promise it won’t.” She leaned forward, her hand gripping the arm of her chair, a silent plea in her beautiful brown eyes. “I just want to meet her. And I won’t stay long. Just tell me the place and time, and I’ll be there.”

Fuck. Why did she have to be so…not what he expected? He’d come prepared for one of those “Do you know who I am?” Hollywood types, her vanity and ego covered in beauty a millimeter deep.

Or maybe that was the woman he hoped he’d be dealing with.

Unfortunately, Whitney Richardson’s beauty wasn’t airbrushed or Photoshopped, and if her vices were vanity and ego, she was a magician at hiding them. Maybe that meant he could take her at her word.

“What about this?” He tapped his finger on the ten-page document on his desk that would grant him sole legal custody of his daughter. “Would you like to go over this now?” He was hopeful but not holding his breath.

“Before I sign anything, I’d like to go over it with my lawyer. You don’t mind if I take it home, do you?”

Yes, he minded, but then again, what choice did he have? It was a legal document. Of course, she wanted her lawyer to look it over. She didn’t know him from Adam and had zero reason to trust him. Buried in all that legalese could be a clause that stipulated she pay eighteen years of child support. But he knew he wouldn’t be able to breathe easy until he got her signature on the dotted line.

“That way, we can finish it up at our next meeting,” she said when he was slow to respond. “Please.”

The softly spoken one-word plea finally got her what she’d been pushing for the past five minutes. Not that he could refuse, given the choice appeared to be no visit, no signature.

“How about Saturday at one?”

A smile broke out across her face, and if he thought she was beautiful before, she was positively breathtaking now.

“Thank you so much. You have no idea what this means to me,” she said, her eyes bright with emotion.

Oh, he had a good idea. He just hoped the visit was going to be what it took to bring their association to a close. Then Haylee and he could go on with their lives.
