The only place small-town outcast Alex Lawson fits in is the online fan forum she built for The Arcane Files, a long-running werewolf detective show. Her dedication to archiving fictional supernatural lore made her Internet-famous, even if she harbors a secret disdain for the show’s star, Devin Ashwood. (Never meet your heroes—sometimes they turn out to be The Worst.)
Ever since his show went off the air, Devin and his career have spiraled, but waking up naked in the woods outside his LA home with no memory of the night before is a new low. It must have been a coincidence that the once-in-a-century Wolf Blood Moon crested last night. The claws, fangs, and howling are a little more difficult to explain away. Desperate for answers, Devin finds Alex—the closest thing to an expert that exists. If only he could convince her to stop hating his guts long enough to help….
Once he makes her an offer she can’t refuse, these reluctant allies lower their guards trying to wrangle his inner beast. Unfortunately, getting up close and personal quickly comes back to bite them.

“Colby fought his wolf’s urges all the time. In the lore of The Arcane Files, your wolf was like an extra-feral version of your id, animal instincts kicked into turbogear, constantly oriented toward maximizing pleasure and minimizing pain. Your wolf wanted what you wanted deep down, only more. Never in a million years would Devin have guessed that the terrible beast of his nightmares would want….her.”
In 2008, my world was overtaken by Twilight. Fast forward to 2011, Teen Wolf came on the screen, and so began my obsession with the paranormal. When I read the blurb for this story, I was so excited because it felt like it was I was going to be able to feel the excitement I felt when I began reading Twilight. I truly expected Rosie Danan to deliver, and I had high hopes since she has written some really great stories. Sadly instead of itching to pick it up and read, I could barely make it through this if I’m being honest.
Devin Ashwood, child star of The Arcane Files, still acts like a childish man-boy in his 40s. There is absolutely no way that anyone can convince me this man was 42 and had previously been married. He acted like he got stuck at 21 and never matured emotionally at all. Sometimes he was downright cruel to Alex, and I thought she acted like a doormat for letting him treat her this way. I thought, oh well maybe he is going to grovel at the end and redeem himself or sacrifice himself for this woman, but that didn’t happen. He just gave me the ick.
Alex was better than he was, but I just felt like she was all these clichés about a goth woman thrown together just to make sure you knew that she was a goth girl. These characters felt uninteresting and unoriginal for such a unique plot. I really thought we were going to get something special here, but it was disappointing.
I did enjoy the side characters, Alex’s friends, and her dad, and there were glimmers of hope that this could have been great. Some of the dialogue was funny and witty, but these things were just not enough to make up for the very glaring problems that it had.
If you’re a fan of Lana Ferguson or Hannah Grace, then this would work better for you than it did for me.
