Many of us romance readers wish we had the same things the heroines we read about get: a beautiful man who adores us, a close community of friends, fantastic sex, and a guaranteed happy ending.
But a tweet from Lauren Plude, editorial assistant at Grand Central Publishing, got me thinking. Lauren wrote: “One of the many reasons I sometimes wish I was a romance heroine–they never seem to have to wait for AM laundry delivery.”
Since I read that while working on a really annoying project, I started thinking about all the little blessings romance heroines have in their lives.
Forget the hot heroes; these are the real reasons I wish I were a romance heroine:
1. They never have to scrub toilets, grout or bathroom caulking.
2. Their hero is always willing to pitch in with dishwashing—often insisting on it without even being asked (unthinkable!).
3. If I were a Harlequin Presents heroine, I could own an art gallery in Sydney without actually having to work hard at managing it while I run around with my billionaire lover.
4. I’d have friends with exactly the skills and experience I’d need to rely on for every problem in my life.
5. Perhaps most importantly, though, nine hours at the office could be glossed over in a paragraph.

If I were a Harlequin Blaze heroine, I could drop trou anywhere and have the hottest sex of my life without worrying about how dirty the surface of whatever I’m perched on is.
If I were a romance heroine, I could be like Barbie when I grow up… doctor, lawyer, princess, duchess, a peer, FBI agent, divorcee, blue stocking, small town girl, mistress.
If I were a romance heroine, I would always have something witty to say (thanks authors).
If I were a romance heroine, I would always have a super fabulous wardrobe.
Love the list. I wish I never had to clean grout. Ah, the life of a romance heroine…
A brilliant post! Now to think, think, think…
Okay!
1- Car repairs, computer meltdowns, pay bills, and the other tasks heeped upon me would all be taken care of by the wonderful assistant my billionaire husband hired me.
2- Dinner is served by everyone but me! No more cooking and the food is always the best.
3- No more waiting for security checks in the airport and TSA body searchs because my studly hero has a private jet.
4-My man knows exactly what I want and just how to please me in all aspects of my life. No more bad birthday gifts or clothes that don’t fit. Everything is thoughtfully picked out just for me.
5- The word ‘vacation’ would actually mean vacation. No more days off to work around the house. I’d actually be going to that romantic island or sandy beaches in Greece.
Thanks for the great post and allowing me to dream a little today.
Great answers so far!
I envy:
(1) Glorious vacations spanning the globe. At the drop of a hat and as often as possible.
(2) No housework or home repairs.
(3) Always a HEA!
1) Never have to shave ever again (legs or underarms).
2) No need to maintain a haircut or color; that beautiful style is natural, of course.
3) Have a magic pet that has no needs but offers all the comfort necessary.
Romance heroines seem to have it all, don’t they? 😉
Some perks for me would be…
1. Having a man who cherishes me, he’s vocal about it and at the end of the day he is right next to me and is all mine.
2. I get the pleasures of being a pet owner but never have to clean up after them. They are clean and huggable 24/7.
3. I don’t have to cook!
4. I can run errands looking at my worst and “the one” will still notice me.
5. No matter how bad my day is, no matter how my love life appears in tatters in the end there is a happy ending (or beginning)!!
If I were a romance heroine:
1) I would never have to diet again because I would always be the perfect size
2) All the things everyone else has said (you guys are GOOD!) ~~~
So totally would want to be a heroine in a romance of my own.
1. having a fabulous wardrobe
2. can ride a carriage all day
3. can go about and have mini adventures in town
4. finding a man that can tame and put up with me 🙂
5. and be swept off my feet with that devilish smile
If I were a romantic heroine, I would have the wardrobe that goes along with it. No more jean shopping, rather, I would have brocade gowns, silk gowns, and nothing I wear would be off the racks.
If I were a romance heroine, some perks would be:
1. handsome bf/hubby to hang out with
2. always a good vacation….somewhere in islands.
3. A guy takes control of all the situations during hard times. (really need tht sometimes)
4. He dont care abt anyone’s opinion so I would like tht. (love tht abt any guy especially in books where heroine doesnt have
to worry much)
5. Wish to live in a castle.
So many “heroine” benefits! A few:
They have good hair, without even trying.
The travel! The vacations! The globe-trotting!
All the chocolate, none of the calories.
No yucky household chores, ever again.
The heroes are pretty good, too.
Thanks for a fun post.
They are almost always very smart and have great shapes and never have any allergies.
The five reasons I’d like to be a romance heroine are:
1. I wouldn’t have to get up at 6:00 in the morning to go to work!
2. My hero would think I was “witty” not sarcastic.
3. My hero would appreciate how skilled I am when I beat him at cards (or any other game for that matter).
4. My hero would think I’m petite not “height challenged”.
5. Last and not least I would have a chef to cook a wonderful dinner instead of having to make a home-cooked meal every night when I got home from said job (refer to #1).
Great answers. If I was a romance heroine I would always be nice and slim, have lots of clothes that fit perfect. Have a very hunky hero that loves me to no end and really helps me out. I would have maids and cooks to do the household jobs. All I would have to do is set around and look pretty.
I like the reasons you listed. I would like to be a romance heroine because they are always natural beauties who look great without makeup. They usually have gorgeous curly hair that needs no taming and they never spend an hour getting ready in the morning.
How fun! My reasons are kind of lame …lol…If I were a romance heroine I would:
1. I would like to be a romance heroine to find out the father of my secret baby is a prince from a European country and he’s just come back to make me his queen and claim our child.
2. Another reason I would like to be a romance heroine is because the man from last nights unforgettable night just walked in the door and is my new millionaire boss – and I’m pregnant with his secret baby
3. I would like to be a romance heroine because the hot navy pilot from last night just walked into my astronaught training program as my new student.
4. I would like to be a romance heroine because my closet would never be empty, I would always fit in model clothes and I could travel the world with my billionaire boss – who wants to marry me
5. I would like to be a romance heroine because the new sheriff who just arrived in town , and is my ex-boyfriend, has to come out to investigage the mysterious bones dug up on my family’s ranch.
Good list.
– I’d have terrific clothes and jewels.
– I would be able to attend all the wonderful functions and events.
– Meals are planned, prepared, served, and cleaned up by someone else.
– I would have whatever means of transportation I wanted (time appropriate) available to me. Drive included if I want.
– I will have a lovely house, furnished perfectly, and the servants to make certain it is in order.
– Our children will be beautiful and intelligent.
– If we need time alone to go out of town or the country for days/weeks someone trustworthy will be there to watch the children.
Great fun. Thanks for the exercise in imagination.
One other thing, as a romance heroine I would be tall. No more having trouble reaching for things on the top shelf.
If I was a romance heroine I would be
1. Beautiful and slim
2. An intrepid heroine that would be happy, witty, inteligent, funny, and always getting into some kind of trouble that my hero would help me get out of
3. I would have a handsome hero that loved me and sex and would have our HEA
4. I would never have to pay bills, clean house, or prepare meals. There would be servants to do the cleaning and the meals, and my man would pay all the household bills and buy me beautiful clothes and jewels
5. We would travel all over the world and find lots of adventure
6. I would marry a billionaire and have lots of beautiful children that we would spoil rotten
7. Have all the dogs I want without worrying about having the room for them and spoil them rotten as well
Isn’t it wonderful to dream? That’s why I love romance books so much. You can escape and be in the heroine’s shoes.
I love this. I would def love to be a romance heroine. Have my HOT hero, a great job, wonderful home that I wouldn’t have to clean, great vacations to anywhere I want to go, and so much more. Oh, did I mention my HOT, HOT, HOT hero?
I love that romance heroines:
1. Never smell and are always so perfectly groomed.
2. Always have perfectly kissable mouths.
i think that what is always in decribing heroine in novel had made me envious, ranging from fine facial hair, pretty face, a good behavior, higher dignity from common people as well as abundance of teasure until they do not need to anything becaue all have available for them and they always get the hero who always love them and would do anything to them. So i want to be like the heroine ^^
I agree about the wardrobe. I would have a great time with the modiste. It would also be nice to have someone do my hair and get the laundry done.

There would be about 100 hours in each of my days so that I could work or take care of my children or run my ranch and also spend many hours with my hero.
wow you guys are good! there’s lots of ideas here I never would have thought of… my fav is still HOT HOT HOT hero…
I am always seen as perfect to the hero in every way.
No money problems ever!
If I were a romance heroine, I would be tall and willowy, instead of short and chunky!
If I were an HP heroine, I’d get whisked to exotic locations without a wardrobe, but fun, luxurious clothes would still appear for me.
If I were a HP romance heroine, I would always be beautiful, not have menial chores to do and have a handsome alpha male to sweep me away from an ordinary life. How awesome would that be?
If I were a romance herione…
I would have a hero who makes me feel good about myself, beautiful and wanted! =D
Being miserable would make me eat less.
I would never have less than magical sex with my hero.
I would only be sick during pregnancy long enough for my hero to notice and realize I must be pregnant — I’d feel awesome and glowing and ready for love the rest of the pregnancy.
If I were a romance heroine:
No matter what my income level is, I always have a nice place to live and buy beautiful clothes.
I always meet single, rich and good looking men.
I never have to exercise, yet manage to stay thin.
There a several things… The servants, the wonderful clothes, perfect skin, no periods, wonderful house, loyal friends
The heroine always get the guy *sigh* & neither seems to suffer from morning breath.
Let’s see…
No chores unless I Wanted to or did them to destress.
Don’t need to juggle the bills, or if I did it’s temporary cause my man will be a millionaire.
the perfect gift is given/received every time, no more wrong gift worries
Sex is phenomenal every single time
my dream job Will work out & in only a few months time
If anything bad happens an incredible sexy smart man will happen to save the day
I love all the comments so far! I want to be a romance heroine because the gorgeous hero would adore me, find every word that comes out of my mouth fascinating, and would handle every problem that arises with ease, while telling me not to worry, it’s taken care of! My biggest problem would be what ball to attend and which gown to wear!
Sigh, it’s nice to dream!
I agree with Susan Laura.
Great ideas for romance heroines. My 5 reasons are
1. Never having to get in and out of transportations, entering doors or pulling chairs out for myself.
2. Always having a good figure and a beautiful face.
3. Always getting to wear the latest fashions that never seem to get dirty.
4. Getting to pursue the most romanitc male in the area and usually winning his favors
5. Getting to see first hand what is under that Scottish Highlander’s skirt!
I love this post! And I’m gonna take the hot body and luscious romantic dinners full of wine and yummy food without the need for gym time. And after that 3 hour stuffed dinner my stomach will remain flat and ready for a romp in the sheets…not the sleepy couch time that usually follows a foodie night 😉 Oh, fictional versions of “real” women…how I envy thee…
I love to read romances where two people work together to build a life and home..8.
