{"id":1190,"date":"2009-11-20T01:00:59","date_gmt":"2009-11-20T06:00:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/smittenbybooks.com\/blog\/?p=1190"},"modified":"2009-11-20T01:00:59","modified_gmt":"2009-11-20T06:00:59","slug":"kensington-publishing-reminiscing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/smittenbybooks.com\/blog\/2009\/11\/20\/kensington-publishing-reminiscing\/","title":{"rendered":"Kensington Publishing ~ Reminiscing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Before I launch into my retrospective on <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kensingtonbooks.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kensington&#8217;s<\/a> <\/strong>covers, I would be remiss if I didn&#8217;t mention <span style=\"color: #003300;\"><strong>Kate Duffy<\/strong><\/span>, who was their Editorial Director. As most of you know <span style=\"color: #003300;\"><strong>Kate Duffy<\/strong><\/span> past away September 27, 2009 at the age of 56. Her family, her friends, her authors, and her <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kensingtonbooks.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Kensington<\/strong><\/a> family mourn her loss. We all mourn her loss. <span style=\"color: #003300;\"><strong>Kate Duffy<\/strong><\/span> will be missed.<\/p>\n<p>I would also like to thank my editor, <strong><em>Peter Senftleben<\/em><\/strong>,\u00a0 for finding me a whole list of authors to research. Thank you Peter!<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"padding: 10px; background-color: #dfffff;\"><p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1193\" title=\"loveandcherish_1980_dg\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/smittenbybooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/loveandcherish_1980_dg1.jpg?resize=152%2C252\" alt=\"loveandcherish_1980_dg\" width=\"152\" height=\"252\" \/><br \/>\nAs of 2009, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kensingtonbooks.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Kensington<\/strong><\/a> has been publishing books for 35 years, which would take us back to 1974. I&#8217;m going to start my retrospective in 1980 (it&#8217;s very hard to find original covers going back that far, as I found out). Who did I find in 1980? I found <strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dorothygarlock.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dorothy Garlock&#8217;s<\/a> <\/em><span style=\"color: #800000;\">LOVE AND CHERISH<\/span><\/strong>. Look at the font of the title and how large it is. I think it takes up half the cover? By comparision, Ms. Garlock&#8217;s name is way at the top and significantly smaller. All in all, it&#8217;s a cover fairly appropriate for the time. Very red, wouldn&#8217;t you agree?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"padding: 10px; background-color: #dfffff;\"><p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1209\" title=\"ambertreasure_1983_zebra\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/smittenbybooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/ambertreasure_1983_zebra.jpg?resize=153%2C256\" alt=\"ambertreasure_1983_zebra\" width=\"153\" height=\"256\" \/><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1208\" title=\"captiveecstasy_1981_zebra\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/smittenbybooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/captiveecstasy_1981_zebra.jpg?resize=149%2C252\" alt=\"captiveecstasy_1981_zebra\" width=\"149\" height=\"252\" \/> In 1981 and 1983 respectively, we have <span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong><em>Elaine Barbieri&#8217;s<\/em><\/strong><\/span> <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>CAPTIVE ECSTASY<\/strong><\/span> and <span style=\"color: #008080;\"><strong>AMBER TREASURE<\/strong><\/span>. I must say, <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>CAPTIVE ECSTASY<\/strong><\/span> looks rather primitive to me. I mean I know Native Americans (usually half) were quite popular as heroes back then, but the cover doesn&#8217;t make me think of a grand passion, a romance. And I&#8217;m sure I know the guy on the cover of <span style=\"color: #008080;\"><strong>AMBER TREASURE<\/strong><\/span>. His hair reminds me of a guy I saw on Columbo. Not kidding. Also notice that Ms. Barbieri&#8217;s name is barely discernible on either cover. All in all, the covers do look dated don&#8217;t they? Wow these books were from almost 30 years ago.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"padding: 10px; background-color: #dfffff;\"><p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1220\" title=\"savagesplendour_1985_zebra\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/smittenbybooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/savagesplendour_1985_zebra.jpg?resize=150%2C250\" alt=\"savagesplendour_1985_zebra\" width=\"150\" height=\"250\" \/>Two years later <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kensingtonbooks.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Kensington<\/strong><\/a> gave us <strong><em>Constance O&#8217;Banyon&#8217;s<\/em><\/strong> <span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>SAVAGE SPLENDOUR<\/strong><\/span>. As we see the Native American hero continues to be a strong sell in historical romances. This cover has a particular brushstroke that I find&#8230;interesting. I stared at this cover for a long time trying to figure out what was nagging at me about it, until I realized the proportions of the hero and heroine appear to be somewhat off. Her shoulders look too narrow and his arms look too short for his body. Suffice it enough to say this won&#8217;t make my top ten list.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"padding: 10px; background-color: #dfffff;\"><p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1223\" title=\"hiddenfires_1988_zebra\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/smittenbybooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/hiddenfires_1988_zebra.jpg?resize=152%2C250\" alt=\"hiddenfires_1988_zebra\" width=\"152\" height=\"250\" \/>On the other hand, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.betinakrahn.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Betina Krahn&#8217;s<\/em><\/strong><\/a> <strong><span style=\"color: #003300;\">HIDDEN FIRES, <\/span><\/strong>released in 1988, has a perfectly proportioned hero and heroine. This cover works for me. So what if it appears she&#8217;s wearing a negligee and that it doesn&#8217;t look all that &#8216;historical&#8217;. It&#8217;s a lovely clinch cover, very much the norm. But once again, I can not make out Ms. Krahn&#8217;s name. I think not only is it small but the font is not lending itself to easy reading.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"padding: 10px; background-color: #dfffff;\"><p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1227\" title=\"passionssweetrevenge_1990_zebra\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/smittenbybooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/passionssweetrevenge_1990_zebra.jpg?resize=154%2C250\" alt=\"passionssweetrevenge_1990_zebra\" width=\"154\" height=\"250\" \/>Now around 1990, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kensingtonbooks.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><span style=\"color: #003300;\">Kensington <\/span><\/strong><\/a>added a hologram to their <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>Zebra <\/em><\/span>covers as you can see on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jogoodman.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Jo Goodman&#8217;s<\/em><\/strong><\/a> <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>PASSION&#8217;S SWEET REVENGE<\/strong><\/span>. It was finding this cover that I realized I used to get these books, 4 (four) every month. At that point I was hooked on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bobbismithbooks.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Bobbi Smith<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jogoodman.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\"><strong><em>Jo Goodman<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/a> and <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong><em>Cassie Edwards<\/em><\/strong><\/span>. I read America West, Native American stories until I couldn&#8217;t read them anymore. Seriously.\u00a0 But I really like this cover. It definitely has a more historical feel than <span style=\"color: #003300;\"><strong>HIDDEN FIRES<\/strong><\/span>. And I do remember thinking that the hologram was way cool. \ud83d\ude42<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"padding: 10px; background-color: #dfffff;\">\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1231\" title=\"morepreciousthangold_1992_zebra\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/smittenbybooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/morepreciousthangold_1992_zebra.jpg?resize=153%2C250\" alt=\"morepreciousthangold_1992_zebra\" width=\"153\" height=\"250\" \/> <img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1230\" title=\"forevermyheart_1994_zebra\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/smittenbybooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/forevermyheart_1994_zebra.jpg?resize=150%2C250\" alt=\"forevermyheart_1994_zebra\" width=\"150\" height=\"250\" \/> <img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1232\" title=\"withallmyheart_1999_jogoodman\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/smittenbybooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/withallmyheart_1999_jogoodman.jpg?resize=142%2C246\" alt=\"withallmyheart_1999_jogoodman\" width=\"142\" height=\"246\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In the 199os, we see less skin, less embracing, and more flowers (for certain authors). On <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong><em>Elaine Barbieri&#8217;s<\/em><\/strong><\/span> <span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>MORE PRECIOUS THAN GOLD,<\/strong><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kensingtonbooks.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong> Kensington<\/strong><\/a> has employed a beek-a-boo cover. The font is less<em> &#8216;scripty&#8217; <\/em>than in prior years and please look at the position and scale of Ms. Barbieri&#8217;s name! I want to do a cheer. I&#8217;m so relieved I can now read it. I like this cover. It works for me. And while <strong><em>Jo Goodman&#8217;s<\/em><\/strong> 1994 book, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>FOREVER MY HEART<\/strong><\/span> and her 1999 release<span style=\"color: #30243d;\"><strong> ALL MY HEART<\/strong><\/span> in no way indicated they were historical romances, I didn&#8217;t mind this more tame look. As we saw last week with some of the other authors as they rose in stature when their careers blossomed, their names became as big as or bigger than their titles and hero\/heroine clinch was removed from the front covers of their novels.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"padding: 10px; background-color: #dfffff;\">\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1238\" title=\"stolenecstasy_2001\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/smittenbybooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/stolenecstasy_2001.jpg?resize=153%2C250\" alt=\"stolenecstasy_2001\" width=\"153\" height=\"250\" \/> <img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1240\" title=\"lovingjesse_2004\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/smittenbybooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/lovingjesse_20041.gif?resize=152%2C249\" alt=\"lovingjesse_2004\" width=\"152\" height=\"249\" \/> <img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1241\" title=\"howtoenjoyascandal_2008\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/smittenbybooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/howtoenjoyascandal_2008.gif?resize=157%2C251\" alt=\"howtoenjoyascandal_2008\" width=\"157\" height=\"251\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Having survived the turn of the millennium, the world safely moved into the 21<sup>st<\/sup> century. In 2001 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hannahhowell.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Hannah Howell&#8217;s <\/em><\/strong><\/a><span style=\"color: #333300;\"><strong>CAPTIVE ECSTASY<\/strong><\/span> is on the book shelves. The heroine and hero are in a fairly provocative pose. It&#8217;s a western but it&#8217;s hard to tell. In 2004 we have <span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong><em>Joyce Myrus&#8217;s <\/em><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>LOVING JESSE<\/strong><\/span>. This reminds me of a traditional Regency cover, chaste and sweet. I haven&#8217;t seen one like this from <strong>Kensington<\/strong> up to this point. Four years later in 2008, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.adriennebasso.net\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong><em>Adrienne Basso&#8217;s<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/a> <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>HOW TO ENJOY A SCANDAL<\/strong><\/span> sees our hero and heroine hitting the sheets. Quite literally. Again, here I wouldn&#8217;t\u00a0 peg this as a&#8217; historical looking&#8217; but all in all, it works if the objective was to show the readers they will be getting a sexy read.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"padding: 10px; background-color: #dfffff;\">\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1246\" title=\"LostinYou_Aug08\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/smittenbybooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/LostinYou_Aug08.jpg?resize=172%2C280\" alt=\"LostinYou_Aug08\" width=\"172\" height=\"280\" \/> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.smittenbybooks.com\/theseason_contests_pdfs.html#freereads\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1247\" title=\"sinfulsurrender180\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/smittenbybooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/sinfulsurrender180.jpg?resize=170%2C279\" alt=\"sinfulsurrender180\" width=\"170\" height=\"279\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And now we&#8217;re here in 2009 and as a <strong>Kensington<\/strong> debut author, I&#8217;d be lying if I didn&#8217;t admit how many pins and needles I sat on while waiting for the unveiling of my cover. In 2008 there were many covers that looked like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alixrickloff.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><strong>Alix Rickloff&#8217;s<\/strong><\/em><\/a> <span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\"><strong>LOST IN YOU<\/strong>.<\/span> There was nothing wrong with these types of covers, but I hoping for more clothes and a more historical feel to mine. <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Janice Rossi <\/strong><\/span>in <strong>Kensington&#8217;s<\/strong> art department made sure that not only was I NOT disappointed,\u00a0 but that I was THRILLED with my cover for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.beverleykendall.com\/sinsur.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>SINFUL SURRENDER<\/strong><\/span><\/a>. As you can see, I couldn&#8217;t have asked for a better looking couple. Seriously though, isn&#8217;t my hero (James) gorgeous!
