I get an erection the moment I first lay eyes on her. She looks like no one I\u2019ve ever seen before. Tall, curvy, with thick superhero thighs and a round ass, showcased in black Lycra that hugs every slope. Her big, high breasts and small waist are accentuated by her white tank top. Her body has just enough meat for me to grab a good hold of, and I imagine running my hands over her hills and valleys. I want to imagine more than that, but I\u2019m horny as hell as it is and my erection is already inappropriate, considering I\u2019m in public and all.<\/p>\n

She finally looks my way, aware that I\u2019ve been staring like an idiot. She catches my gaze, her eyes twinkling a vibrant yellow, her pupils large and wet. She smirks at me, causing a shower of glitter to rain from her cheeks, and brushes her purple hair over her shoulder before she bends over to slide a gun out from the harness strapped to her boot.<\/p>\n

I try not to stare into the blinding sun of her tanned cleavage. I try to think of something clever to say to her. Something along the lines of, \u201cI think I know who you are, but shouldn\u2019t you have one eyeball instead of two?\u201d<\/p>\n

But it\u2019s she who comes over to me, gun comfortably in her hand, and stops only a foot away. When she smiles at me, I see fangs.<\/p>\n

Now I\u2019m really confused. At least I know what to say now.<\/p>\n

\u201cWho are you?\u201d I ask her, happy that my voice is hard and deep. I hope it makes her think of sex.<\/p>\n

She raises a perfect brow and up close I\u2019m struck by how bronzed her skin tone is. I don\u2019t think it\u2019s makeup. Not many people in Vancouver manage to keep their tan into the fall.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t know?\u201d she asks. She has an accent. I immediately want to say she\u2019s from England but that\u2019s not it. It\u2019s not Australia either.<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought I did,\u201d I say. \u201cBut your eyes and fangs are throwing me all off.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m vampire Leela, from\u00a0Futurama<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

I grin at her, happy that I was half-right. \u201cShouldn\u2019t you just have\u00a0one<\/em>\u00a0eyeball then?\u201d<\/p>\n

She reaches into her other boot and effortlessly pulls out an eye mask. It\u2019s painted white, with a black pupil in the middle. She waves it at me. \u201cI put it on for photos but I can barely see out of it. I walked into a wall, twice.\u201d She raises two fingers for emphasis. \u201cI figured I\u2019ll just be a vampire the rest of the time.\u201d<\/p>\n

I can seriously listen to her talk all day. \u201cI don\u2019t remember any episode where Leela turned into a vampire.\u201d Maybe it hinted at my secret nerd-boy status, but I watched the cartoon\u00a0Futurama<\/em>\u00a0religiously.<\/p>\n

She wets her lips for a moment and I try my hardest not to adjust my boxer briefs underneath my costume. \u201cI like to think she\u2019ll become a vampire in future episodes. Or maybe she was one once and Matt Groening scrapped the idea. I believe characters have more to their lives than the lives we are shown.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cKind of like people,\u201d I say, hoping I come across as somewhat profound.<\/p>\n

She gives me a slight nod \u2013 indicating I\u2019m not as profound as I thought \u2013 and looks me up and down. \u201cI just had to come over here to tell you you\u2019re the best-dressed guy here. I mean, that must have taken some effort.\u201d<\/p>\n

I grin at her. \u201cGame of Thrones<\/em>, fan?\u201d I ask.<\/p>\n

Another sly nod. \u201cOf course. But who doesn\u2019t love Khal Drogo?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cLast year I dressed up as the author George R.R. Martin,\u201d I tell her. \u201cPeople kept mistaking me for Ernest Hemingway, even though I was carrying a bucket of fried chicken around with me and had a pillow stuffed down my shirt.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo you went for something sexier\u2026\u201d she says as she lets her eyes trail over my body, which automatically makes me stand up straighter. I haven\u2019t left much to the imagination. Jesus sandals, weird billowy pants that I think some granola dude dropped off at the thrift store, plus a leather corset over my abs and leather cuffs on my forearms. My upper body is bare and covered with bronzer and streaks of blue paint and I found a black wig with a long braid down the back. It kind of works. I guess if you don\u2019t know the show, I look like some sparkling warrior who wears too much eye-makeup.<\/p>\n

\u201cHey, girls can\u2019t be the only ones to slut it up at Halloween.\u201d<\/p>\n

She raises her brow.<\/p>\n

And once again, my foot goes in my mouth. \u201cI mean, not that you\u2019re dressed slutty or anything, I just mean–\u201d<\/p>\n

She laughs. \u201cDon\u2019t worry about it,\u201d she says with a wave of her hand. \u201cEveryone<\/em>\u00a0here is dressed slutty. That\u2019s what the holiday is all about, isn\u2019t it? Pretending to be someone else? This is actually my first Halloween, so I\u2019m feeling a little overdressed. Or super nerdy.\u201d She looks around her at the drunk girls\u2014referees and fairies and nurses in wonderfully indecent outfits\u2014and shrugs.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wholeheartedly disagree,\u201d I say, trying not to ogle her all over again. I pause. \u201cWait, your first Halloween?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFirst\u00a0proper<\/em>\u00a0Halloween. The North American kind. We don\u2019t really celebrate it the way you guys do.\u201d<\/p>\n

I cross my arms, insanely curious now. \u201cAnd who is we?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNew Zealand,\u201d she says. \u201cI\u2019m from Auckland.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNice,\u201d I say, \u201cI was going to ask if you were from New Zealand.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her lips twitch and she gives me a shake of her head. \u201cNo you weren\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, I definitely wasn\u2019t going to ask if you were from Australia. I know how you feel about that.\u201d<\/p>\n

For a moment her features look strained, then it passes. \u201cKind of like if I asked if you were American.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cExactly.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo,\u201d she muses and steps closer. She lays her hand on my bicep and I suck in my breath. \u201cAre the tattoos real?\u201d She removes her hand and peers at her palm which is streaked with bronze shimmer shit. \u201cBecause your tan sure isn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n

Damn, I hope I\u2019m not blushing. I clear my throat. \u201cThe tattoos are real, I assure you. I needed a bit of, um, help to get that Dothraki tan going on.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd this?\u201d She reaches for my face and I am frozen in place while she gently fingers my goatee and beard. She grabs the end of it, which I had attempted to braid, and gives it a little tug.<\/p>\n

\u201cOuch,\u201d I say, though it doesn\u2019t really hurt. It turns me on instead. Big surprise.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo it is real,\u201d she says. She sounds impressed.<\/p>\n

I shrug. \u201cI had a month to grow it in. I say, it\u2019s all or nothing. But tomorrow everything is getting shaved off.\u201d<\/p>\n

She frowns and lets go. \u201cPity. I love a scruffy guy.\u201d<\/p>\n

I can\u2019t help but smile. \u201cLucky for you, I\u2019m scruffy for at least twelve more hours.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her mouth twists into a wry smile. I realize I\u2019m being kind of forward with her, but at the same time, she just felt my bicep and fondled my man hair. Then again, I\u2019ve never been very good at reading women. Half of them seem to love my tats and black hair and piercings; the other half seem to think I\u2019m a delinquent from Skid row.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m wondering what she thinks about me when I realize I don\u2019t know her name.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m Josh, by the way,\u201d I say to her, holding out my hand.<\/p>\n

She gives me a surprisingly firm shake in return. \u201cGemma.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s a beautiful name,\u201d I tell her. Even though I\u2019m sincere, I\u2019m aware that it\u2019s very much a pick-up line.<\/p>\n

Gemma snorts and it\u2019s absolutely adorable. \u201cRight. Well, in New Zealand, Gemmas are everywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I bet they don\u2019t look like you.\u201d Okay, so now I\u2019m totally swerving into pick-up line territory. I push it further. \u201cCan I buy you a drink?\u201d<\/p>\n

And there the question sits, floating between us, along with the haze of pot smoke that hangs in the air. The rejection might come fast, or if I\u2019m lucky, not at all. But it\u2019s Halloween, I have a three-beer buzz going on, and I\u2019m feeling pretty good.<\/p>\n

Still, when she nods and says, \u201cSure\u201d I feel my whole body lift with relief.<\/p>\n
