Please extend a warm welcome to Kris. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">~*~*~<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>LOVING IS INTELLIGENT<br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\nBeing a romance writer, I think a lot about  unions, and the romance novel&#8217;s exploration of the concept and practice of union  between two people. \u00a0Being a word nerd, I began exploring this notion of  \u2018union,\u2019 and what it means, and I came to the idea of \u2018attunement.\u2019 \u00a0I was quite  taken with it. \u00a0See what you think.<\/p>\n<p>Attuned means we can \u2018read\u2019 each  other, and respond.\u00a0 And those are, of course, two of the essential components  of intelligence, be it emotional, kinesthetic, or intellectual intelligence: the  ability to notice what\u2019s happening in the \u2018world\u2019 around us, synthesize that  information, and change adaptively in response.<\/p>\n<p>When we are in \u2018union\u2019  with another person, we are attuned to each other, and that means we flex for  him or her. \u00a0We sense the other and shift in response.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, one  could use this \u2018intelligence\u2019 for nefarious purposes, and sometimes our heroes  even do\u2014for awhile&#8211;but that\u2019s before they get \u2018in union\u2019 with the heroine.  \u00a0Once that\u2019s done, once the romance hero is attuned, that barn door is shut, and  there\u2019s no going back. \u00a0 He can\u2019t ever not be attuned to the heroine  again.<\/p>\n<p>Oh, he might try. \u00a0He might insist to the world, to himself, that  nothing is different. \u00a0But <em>everything <\/em>is different. \u00a0He\u2019s never going  back to The Way Things Were, no matter how much he might want to. \u00a0We could  almost pity him, poor guy.<\/p>\n<p>This kind of intelligent union is not  compromise so much as a dance, or like music. \u00a0We move for and with each other,  creating something greater than the sum of the parts. \u00a0In the romance novel, of  course, this delightfulness comes only after a suitably long period\u2013or at least  a suitably emotionally-packed period\u2013-of darkness, discord, and incompatibility.  Utter inflexibility. \u00a0The converse of intelligence.<\/p>\n<p>When we connect at  this deep, \u2018sensing\u2019 level, when we notice new things and learn from them, when  we adapt in response, we are exhibiting the very essence of intelligence. \u00a0When  we write about characters doing this, we are writing about emotionally  intelligent characters.<\/p>\n<p>Who are some great heroes you love from romance  novels? \u00a0\u00a0Why do they grab you?<\/p>\n<p>I forward the thesis that often, at their  core, when the barn door is shut and the romance hero is in the dark  (metaphorically), he does the intelligent thing: he flexes for the  heroine.<\/p>\n<p>And heroines? \u00a0\u00a0Surely they do this as well.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, I  believe women are primed for this sort of core intelligence, socially and  biologically. \u00a0\u00a0But in modern day romances, even those set in historical eras, I  think we often see heroines acting from the other end of the intelligent  continuum, where they witness the hero\u2019s need, but do what is right for  themselves. \u00a0\u00a0And you know, after millennia with things going the other  direction, maybe that\u2019s the intelligent thing to do.<\/p>\n<p>And our heroes love  them for it.
