~*~*~<\/span><\/p>\n

Words, historic and otherwise<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"As a writer of medieval romance, I have to be cautious about my word choices.\u00a0 While I\u2019m not trying to write in authentic 14th<\/sup> century English (or Scots, for my current book), words that are clearly anachronistic not only throw the reader out of the story, they also show a lack of attention to detail that can call your entire story into question.<\/p>\n

Yet as a 20th<\/sup> century writer, even learning when to check a word\u2019s origin takes some practice.\u00a0 I once had a medieval heroine thinking that a nobleman cared \u201cmore about his ego than his people\u2019s stomachs.\u201d\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t until a critique partner pointed it out (after I had read it at least a gazillion times) that I even thought about a word my 20th<\/sup> century brain took for granted.\u00a0 But the word \u201cego\u201d didn\u2019t even exist until the 1700s.<\/p>\n

Then there are the words that are correct, but sound wrong.\u00a0 \u201cAlien\u201d now reminds everyone of creatures from outer space.\u00a0 Yet seven hundred years ago, it meant a \u201cforeigner.\u201d\u00a0 Accurate as it might be, it\u2019s one I avoid.<\/p>\n

I like to sprinkle in period words and then clarify their meaning in context when I must, but I\u2019ve also found that too many medieval spellings and dialect usage is a no-no.\u00a0 Or, in the case of HIS BORDER BRIDE<\/strong><\/span>, a nay-nae.\u00a0 I had sprinkled both throughout the book, feeling very Scottish as I did.<\/p>\n

But when the copy editor questioned my usage and my editor pointed out the confusion, I had an eleventh hour fire drill to go through the manuscript and correct or change my various and inconsistent usage.\u00a0 (Please.\u00a0 Don\u2019t email to tell me I missed one.)<\/p>\n

Next time, it\u2019s no and not!<\/p>\n

I faced a particularly interesting word problem in this book.\u00a0 Falconry was a thematic symbol throughout the story and my heroine was devoted to the sport and her birds.\u00a0 In my research, I discovered a number of words now part of our everyday vocabulary that originally were part of the language of hawking, as it was also called.<\/p>\n

The challenge?\u00a0 These words have taken on a slightly different meaning over the centuries. I had to insert some clarification of each word, just as if it had been totally unfamiliar.<\/p>\n

The very word \u201cfalcon\u201d was properly applied to the female bird.\u00a0 A male falcon was called a \u201ctercel.\u201d\u00a0 (Also tassel, tarsel, or tierce.\u00a0 In the medieval time period, consistent spelling was the hobgoblin of small minds.)\u00a0 All these came from the conventional wisdom that the male was one-third (a terce) smaller than the female.<\/p>\n

\u201cFledgling\u201d<\/em><\/strong> now means new or inexperienced.\u00a0 Originally, it specifically referred to a bird that could fly, but had not yet left the nest.<\/p>\n

\u201cCadger\u201d<\/strong><\/em> now makes us think of a beggar.\u00a0 But in falconry, a \u201ccadger\u201d is the man who wears a \u201ccadge,\u201d a sort of wooden frame that carries the hooded birds out to the field for the hunt.<\/p>\n

\u201cHaggard,\u201d<\/strong><\/em> instantly calls to mind someone who looks very tired.\u00a0 But working backwards, it first meant unruly or untamed and developed from the term for a \u201chaggard\u201d bird.\u00a0 That means one that was captured from the wild after growing into adult plumage and, thus, more difficult to train.<\/p>\n

Another important step in training a falcon was to \u201cman\u201d it, or get the wild bird comfortable around human beings.\u00a0 It\u2019s a logical use of the world, but again, not one that can be used without some explanation.<\/p>\n

I do own a copy of the Oxford English Dictionary, in two volumes, readable only with a magnifying glass.\u00a0 English Through the Ages<\/span> by William Brohaugh has also been a godsend.<\/p>\n

But I\u2019m finding I do more and more online.\u00a0 Here are the sites I love:\u00a0 www.etymonline.com, www.Merriam-Webster.com, and http:\/\/www.dsl.ac.uk<\/a>, the Dictionary of the Scots Language.<\/p>\n
