That book was a tough one to write, in large part because the characters refused to behave.  Oh, who am I kidding?  The characters in <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Nine Rules to Break When Romancing a Rake<\/strong><\/span> didn\u2019t behave either. And, come to think of it . . . I\u2019m currently revising the next book in the series, Eleven Scandals to Start to Win a Duke\u2019s Heart, and these characters like to take little side trips, too.<\/p>\n<p>Before I was a writer, I envied writers.  I thought they were puppetmasters with brilliant ideas and stories involving characters who responded with perfect precision. I thought romance authors said to their heroes, \u201cnow go here, and fall in love,\u201d and to their heroines, \u201cnow go there, and be funny.\u201d And the characters did so, and all was right with the world of Romancelandia.<\/p>\n<p>I thought wrong.<\/p>\n<p>Or, maybe I didn\u2019t and for other authors, characters behave.  But mine don\u2019t. They\u2019re difficult and irritating and stubborn and they almost NEVER do what I want them to do.  And so, as I take a break from finishing my fourth book, I give you:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ten Ways (my) Characters Are Almost Certain to Misbehave<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"background-color: #fbf5ec; padding: 5px 15px 5px 15px;\"><p>1.\tThey will get themselves into ridiculous situations and then stand around staring at me, as though I got them into that club\/roof\/balcony\/outfit, and waiting for me to figure out how to get them out of there.<\/p>\n<p>2.\tThey might just become attracted to someone I was not prepared for them to even meet, let alone become attracted to. *sigh* In this case, open new document. Curse career choice. Start book over again.<\/p>\n<p>3.\tThey will refuse to fall in love\u2014This one happens in every. Single. Book. I\u2019ve come to ignore it. So far, my stubbornness has won the day. I fear the day that it won\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>4.\tThey will refuse to make love\u2014Oh, heroes with too many scruples. Stop. Messing up. My book.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4945\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4945\" style=\"width: 231px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/theseasonforromance.com\/november_3.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4945\" title=\"tenways\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theseasonforromance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/tenways.jpg?resize=231%2C371\" alt=\"\" width=\"231\" height=\"371\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4945\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">New York Times Bestseller!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>5.\u00a0\tThey will decide they don\u2019t like their name. This usually stops the writing process for at least two days in the middle of every book.  At which point I threaten to leave them all there, unmoving, unloved, forever. Until they decide what name they want.  (Isabel in Ten Ways was Isabelle for two-thirds of the book. And then . . . she got uppity.)<\/p>\n<p>6.\u00a0\tThey will wake me up at 4:30 in the morning to tell me that they wish they\u2019d said this in that scene instead of that. As though I haven\u2019t done enough waking up in the middle of the night and wishing I\u2019d said that instead of this in my real life, now I have to worry about my neurotic heroines as well?<\/p>\n<p>7.\u00a0\tThe characters from my next book will start getting antsy and barging in on your time with my current book.  They will pop up in strange places.  Like restaurants and Old Navy. They will say things like, \u201cI know you still don\u2019t know how you\u2019re ending *this* book, but when it comes time for mine, could you make sure I wear a pinstriped waistcoat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>8.\tWhen I reply to the above with a smart-mouthed, \u201cWhat makes you think you\u2019re ever getting a book?\u201d They respond with a raised eyebrow and, \u201cJust try skipping my book. You\u2019ll never be published again.\u201d And that threat is enough to keep me up at night.<\/p>\n<p>9.\u00a0\tMy heroine will make me want to be her friend. This is annoying. Because I will have to leave her to her happily ever after eventually, and then I\u2019ve lost a friend.<\/p>\n<p>10.\u00a0\tMy hero will make me fall in love with him. This is also annoying. Because I really can\u2019t afford to fall in love with two men a year *and* have a marriage. Luckily, there is a little of my husband in all of my heroes . . . or maybe that\u2019s the other way around?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Thanks so much for having me Bev!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">~*~*~<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I love it when Sarah comes by to visit.
