{"id":5354,"date":"2010-12-07T00:00:12","date_gmt":"2010-12-07T05:00:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/theseasonforromance.com\/wordpress\/?p=5354"},"modified":"2010-12-07T00:00:12","modified_gmt":"2010-12-07T05:00:12","slug":"cathys-marryin-em-off","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/smittenbybooks.com\/blog\/2010\/12\/07\/cathys-marryin-em-off\/","title":{"rendered":"Cathy&#8217;s Marryin&#8217; &#8216;Em Off"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Marryin\u2019 \u2018Em Off<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cathymaxwell.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-2252\" title=\"cathymaxwell\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theseasonforromance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/cathymaxwell.jpg?resize=118%2C176\" alt=\"\" width=\"118\" height=\"176\" \/><\/a>Pity my poor daughter.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t arrange a marriage for her.<\/p>\n<p>Or at least, that was the attitude she discovered when she attended a semester of school in India.\u00a0 The Indian girls of Samantha\u2019s ripe old age of twenty (and most much younger) were already promised.\u00a0 Their parents had taken care of them.<\/p>\n<p>Visiting Sam in India, I spent an afternoon in the company of parents who felt it a duty and an honor to explain to me the value of arranged marriages.\u00a0 Statistics actually show they are successful marriages.\u00a0 However, these Indian parents were preaching to the choir.\u00a0 If I could chose my son\u2019s wife, I would have married him off long ago!<\/p>\n<p>Throughout much of history, young men and women from families with suitable assets have had their marriages arranged for them.\u00a0\u00a0 And there have always been those who would buck their parents\u2019 wishes.<\/p>\n<p>In <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>HIS CHRISTMAS PLEASURE<\/strong><\/span>, my latest book, I play with the attitudes towards arranged marriages.\u00a0 Abby\u2019s parents defied parental wishes and happily married for love&#8211;so why won\u2019t they let her?<\/p>\n<p>We know the answer.\u00a0 We must protect our children.\u00a0 (Can I confess now that I\u2019m so over parenting?\u00a0 I have young adults.\u00a0 They didn\u2019t listen much when they were younger and listen a bit better now&#8211;but it\u2019s time for me.)<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m not convinced that fate doesn\u2019t play a huge hand in the decision of who we marry and what twists and turns that marriage may take.\u00a0 I\u2019m not certain how it all works but life seems to happen exactly as it should.<\/p>\n<p>And I do believe that each of us, whether our parents choose our mate or we do, wake up sometime within the first two weeks after a marriage and\u00a0 wonder what in the world have we done.\u00a0 You almost have to get to know a person all over again after you\u2019ve married him.\u00a0 That commitment of ceremony and vows means something.\u00a0 It roots out preconceived notions, fears, and fantasies and hopefully leaves a stronger, more meaningful relationship in their place.\u00a0 Or not.<\/p>\n<p>This is even true of marriages of convenience.\u00a0 I use this plot twist in many of my books but I think it plays equally well in contemporary settings.\u00a0 How many of us have married because we want to give a baby a father?\u00a0 Or find a need for a mate to help face the world?\u00a0 I saw quite of few of those types of marriages when I was in the Navy&#8211;and you know, many worked out.\u00a0 I have a theory that we never agree to marry anyone for whom we don\u2019t feel at least a spark of attraction.<\/p>\n<p>And what about you?\u00a0 Not every wedding story is rose petals and bridal gowns.\u00a0 There\u2019s always a rub.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Did you jump into marriage without hesitation?\u00a0 Or was your mate someone your family approved of . . . maybe even nudged you toward?
