{"id":5825,"date":"2011-02-02T04:36:31","date_gmt":"2011-02-02T09:36:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/theseasonforromance.com\/wordpress\/?p=5825"},"modified":"2011-02-02T04:36:31","modified_gmt":"2011-02-02T09:36:31","slug":"a-hero-by-any-other-name","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/smittenbybooks.com\/blog\/2011\/02\/02\/a-hero-by-any-other-name\/","title":{"rendered":"A Hero By Any Other Name?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>HOLDING OUT FOR A HERO<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-5826\" title=\"An Invitation To Sin\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theseasonforromance.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/An-Invitation-To-Sin.jpg?resize=220%2C354\" alt=\"\" width=\"220\" height=\"354\" \/>For your consideration:\u00a0 one anthology with four very different and very hunky men.\u00a0 But as different as they are, they share one thing in common\u2014they\u2019re all heroes.\u00a0 Three of the writers in the anthology <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong><em>AN INVITATION TO SIN<\/em><\/strong><\/span>, thought it might be fun to talk about the qualities that make up a hero.\u00a0 How, in fact, do we know that heroines are actually holding out for a hero, and not some pale, pathetic imitation?<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Sally MacKenzie says:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I think the kind of hero I write must be shaped by the fact I\u2019ve always lived in a sea of testosterone: first a father and two brothers, then a husband and four sons. No sisters, no daughters (but one daughter-in-law now.)\u00a0 I like men, and I think I understand them&#8211;until, of course, one of them does something to prove they are indeed an alien species.<\/p>\n<p>My heroes are tall and handsome, of course, but I don\u2019t describe their appearance in great detail&#8211;I want my reader to be able to imagine them in a way that most appeals to her. They are smart; they have power and wealth and prestige if not from their pedigree then their character; and they are sexy.\u00a0 Many, many women lust after them&#8211;Damian Weston, the Earl of Kenderly and the hero of \u201cThe Naked Prince,\u201d was dubbed the Prince of Hearts by the <em>ton<\/em>&#8211;but my heroes don\u2019t become egotistical jerks as a result.\u00a0 They aren\u2019t rakes; they don\u2019t use women.\u00a0 Damian, now bored and annoyed by London society, would rather spend an evening working on his current Latin translation than attend another ball.\u00a0\u00a0 And they have families&#8211;fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, aunts&#8211;and friends whom their care about deeply.\u00a0 Damian is attending the house party in \u201cThe Naked Prince\u201d solely to protect his friend Stephen Parker-Roth from the machinations of an unscrupulous female.<\/p>\n<p>They know what love is, but haven\u2019t felt true romantic love until they encounter their heroine.\u00a0 And once they do, they are off on a maddening, frustrating, exasperating&#8211;and exhilarating ride.<\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Vanessa Kelly says:<\/span> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m pretty old school when it comes to heroes\u2014historical romance old school.\u00a0 That means I\u2019m a sucker for alpha males, especially the kind who wear leather boots and breeches and tends to fall into the category of rake.\u00a0 To me, there\u2019s nothing more seductive than watching a cynical, hard-ass man, who has vowed never to fall in love, tumble hard for some pert miss, starched-up governess, or crusading bluestocking.\u00a0 These kinds of guys usually need heroines who have a generous heart and lots of empathy, but aren\u2019t willing to put up with bad behavior.\u00a0 Such an equation usually generates tons of heat and conflict and makes for great fun\u2014both for the writer and the reader.<\/p>\n<p>But alpha males have to be more than hard-ass jerks.\u00a0 They must also display a willingness to protect the weak, especially children and dotty old spinsters.\u00a0 Although tough and cynical, they are rarely, if ever, cruel.\u00a0 And if do sometimes stray over the line, they usually suffer paroxysms of remorse over the hurt they\u2019ve inflicted on others\u2014even if they have trouble recognizing that\u2019s what they\u2019re feeling!\u00a0 They must also have a strong sense of honor and a need to see good prevail over evil.\u00a0 Sometimes they might be a bit hard-headed in how they view the world, but our intrepid heroine will eventually point them in the right direction.\u00a0 And, they\u2019ll listen to her.<\/p>\n<p>Captain Christian Archer, the hero of my novella, <strong><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">The Pleasure Of A Younger Lover<\/span>, <\/em><\/strong>is all alpha male in that he is big and strong and very tough.\u00a0 In fact, he\u2019s a soldier.\u00a0 But he is also kind and generous, and very protective of the heroine, whom he\u2019s loved for years.\u00a0 He\u2019s determined to win her and he won\u2019t let any obstacles\u2014even the heroine\u2019s own stubborn rejection of him\u2014stand in his way.<\/p>\n<p>Oh, and there\u2019s one other thing I want in a hero\u2014a sense of humor.\u00a0 If he can make me laugh, then I\u2019m his forever!<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>Kaitlin says:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When I read a really good romance novel, I always fall a little in love with the hero.\u00a0 The same thing happens when I write.\u00a0 I have to be a little in love with my main male character in order to make him appealing.
