\nJames knew quite well that he had merely had the wind knocked out of him, and that the young woman leaning over him was therefore no celestial being. Also, angels were generally represented as fair creatures, golden of hair and garbed in heavenly blue. Nothing angelic about deep brown eyes that fairly crackled with intelligence behind their momentary anxiety, nor about those dark curls peeping from beneath a scarlet cloak.<\/p>\n

Yet for all that, the girl was an angel. He smiled lazily at her.<\/p>\n

Her brows drew together slightly, which only served to further highlight her deep-set, expressive eyes.<\/p>\n

\u201cSir, are you injured?\u201d<\/p>\n

Her voice was clear and melodious. Angelic, even.<\/p>\n

\u201cNothing worse than bruises, I trust, miss,\u201d he assured her.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo you think you can rise?\u201d<\/p>\n

The angel could not possibly realize she had committed a double entendre. Sweet-faced and innocent, she was no older than Anna and likely a little younger. She spoke in the soft, cultured tones of a gentlewoman.<\/p>\n

But he allowed himself an inward smile nonetheless. \u201cI trust I can,\u201d he said, pushing himself up to a sitting position with a slight wince. He had landed on his left shoulder, and it pained him when he moved.<\/p>\n

She rocked back on her heels to maintain a correct distance between them, and the hood of her cloak fell back to reveal all her thick brown hair, which James knew must have begun the morning neatly coiled but was now wind-tossed.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut you are injured, sir! I\u2019m so very sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n

He blinked at her. \u201cWhatever for?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI startled your horse.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNot deliberately, I trust, unless you have the power to summon the wind.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her lips twitched as though she wanted to smile but was uncertain of the propriety of such a course. \u201cNo, sir.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, then. You\u2019ve no need to apologize. I\u2019ve but a trifling pain in my shoulder, nothing more.\u201d He glanced over the offending shoulder and spotted Ghost galloping down the valley, with Anna on Shade in close pursuit. \u201cGhost is uninjured as well, and giving my sister a chance to exhibit what a master equestrienne she is.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt must be a fine thing, to ride so well.\u201d<\/p>\n

The angel\u2019s voice was wistful, and James turned to look at her again. \u201cAre you a horsewoman, miss?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI never had the opportunity to learn.\u201d<\/p>\n

He studied her more closely. Her simple dress and cloak were well made, but without the fashionable line and elegance that marked the work of an expensive London modiste. She must come of family genteel enough to see its daughters educated, but not wealthy enough to keep a stable. She couldn\u2019t be Lord Almont\u2019s intended, as he had first suspected, and he rejoiced that this pretty innocent wasn\u2019t to be the bride of a foolish lord almost old enough to be her grandfather.<\/p>\n

The taproom of the Stellzburg Inn was full of life. Life that had eluded Winn up until this time. The energy and excitement that was not found in a library. Travelers, mostly men, and mostly strangers to each other, were drinking, laughing. The innkeeper, his wife, and their servers threaded themselves through the crowd, delivering drinks and food with smiles, and sometimes a wry comment that made the customers laugh.<\/p>\n

But it was all perfectly aboveboard. Respectable even.<\/p>\n

Somewhat disappointing, that.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor a minute there you looked blissfully happy, so how is it I rejoin you and you\u2019re wearing a frown?\u201d Jason asked as he returned to the table. \u201cEr . . . \u00a0you have foam on your nose.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOh!\u201d Winn said as she turned bright red. Jason reached in his pocket but came up empty.<\/p>\n

\u201cDamn,\u201d he said, handing her a cloth napkin from their table. \u201cI keep forgetting these are not my own clothes and my handkerchiefs are not where I expect them to be. No, you missed.\u201d He indicated her face.<\/p>\n

She wiped again but must have missed the offending foam again, because Jason took the napkin from her hand and, cupping her chin, wiped the end of her nose gently. \u201cThere, you\u2019re perfect. Now, why were you scowling before?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI was?\u201d she asked, her face remarkably hot. Must be the beer, she decided. \u201cOh, I was reflecting.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cReflecting?\u201d he asked, bemused. \u201cOn what, pray tell?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat reality rarely lives up to expectations.\u201d At his quizzical expression, she continued. \u201cI thought the taproom of an inn would be . . .\u00a0 bawdier. More like a public house.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jason turned completely still. \u201cYou\u2019ve been to a public house?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, but I\u2019ve seen illustrations,\u201d she argued. \u201cSomeone playing a fast fiddle in the corner, barmaids with their breasts spilling out. Also, I would like to have some illusions preserved. But here we are in the German countryside, and I have not even seen one pair of lederhosen,\u201d she finished mournfully.<\/p>\n

Jason threw back his head in laughter, his deep- throated guffaws drawing the attention that Winn\u2019s hesitant giggle had not.<\/p>\n

\u201cExpectations are a heavy lot. Perhaps we can find you some lederhosen in Nuremberg. But for now, just be happy that we are amongst actual Germans.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy?\u201d she asked, her eyebrow going up.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause they are logical enough to bring us\u2014 and charge us for\u2014 only one and a half plates of food.\u201d He smiled.<\/p>\n

\u201cThank you,\u201d she replied with a nod of acknowledgement.<\/p>\n

And it was not some few minutes later that the innkeeper himself brought over their food\u2014 smelling so good and buttery that Winn for a few seconds considered that maybe she could have made use of a full plate.<\/p>\n

\u201cDanke<\/em>,\u201d she said to the innkeeper in anticipation of being served her eagerly awaited meal. Jason casually put his arm around her back, some proprietary instinct letting the innkeeper infer they were indeed coupled.<\/p>\n

\u201cBitte<\/em>.\u201d The innkeeper smiled back at them. Strange, for the first time since they had met, the innkeeper\u2019s stern countenance had fled, lending him a sort of elfin charm. \u201cI hope you are enjoying yourselves, yes?\u201d he continued in English, still holding the food on his tray.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes,\u201d \u201cVery much,\u201d she and Jason replied in turn.<\/p>\n

\u201cFour days married.\u201d The innkeeper shook his head with a smile.<\/p>\n

\u201cFive tomorrow,\u201d Jason said, his voice straining on the lie. \u201cThat tray looks terribly heavy,\u201d he continued, practically salivating\u2014 for which Winn could not blame him. \u201cYou should set it down . . .\u201d<\/p>\n

But the innkeeper was lost in his own line of thought to even consider placing the tray of food in front of two famished customers. \u201cI remember when I was four days married! My wife\u2014 she was so young and lovely we did not emerge from our rooms for the whole week!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEr, right,\u201d Winn piped up. \u201cBut we were a bit hungry, you see . . .\u00a0 from all the . . .\u00a0 staying in. So if you could\u2014 \u201d<\/p>\n

Then the innkeeper turned and addressed the whole room in his booming voice in German. The room gave a solid cheer and then began clapping in time, chanting the same word. The last one the innkeeper had said to them: \u201cKuss<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat on earth?\u201d Winn asked, utterly confused.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe told the room we are newlyweds,\u201d Jason whispered to her and then hesitated. \u201cAnd then he said that . . .\u00a0 oh, just follow my lead.\u201d<\/p>\n

And he leaned down and kissed her.<\/p>\n\n
