I thought the book was absolutely fabulous but the reviewer thought otherwise. She hated the hero&#8230;for the very same reasons I loved him.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, this got me thinking why do I love the hero. Why do I connect so well with his character. He wasn&#8217;t not even close to warm and fuzzy&#8211;not to say that&#8217;s how women prefer their men. Most readers would consider him cold, remote, a bit of an island. He wasn&#8217;t cruel or hateful to the heroine, but he wasn&#8217;t nice and they didn&#8217;t particularly like each other at first. They were, however, violently attracted to each other much to their chagrin. And they fought the attraction. Fought it, fought it, fought it.<\/p>\n<p>Sounds like a lot of conflict right? Well that&#8217;s another reason the reviewer didn&#8217;t like it, it was too much for her. I, on the other hand, relished the conflict. To me, that makes the coming together in the end all that much better.<\/p>\n<p>And why is that, I wondered. Why do I love that kind of high intensity conflict between my hero and heroine. Why do I like my heroes standoffish, so self-contained? I thought back to the kind of books that hooked me into reading romances, you know those delicious Harlequin Presents of the early 80s with their super alpha males. I also thought back to the males in my life. I grew up with three brothers and my father wasn&#8217;t the warm and cuddly type. Actually none of them were&#8211;although my brothers are warm and cuddly with their own children. I realized that&#8217;s what I was accustomed to in men. My youngest brother<em> is<\/em> extremely witty and sarcastic and enjoys that same dry sarcasm I adore.<\/p>\n<p>So you see, I believe I take comfort in reading about men I<em> understand <\/em>and moreover, that I&#8217;m <em>accustomed<\/em> to. I get them. I think I even get how they tick. And let&#8217;s face it, a man like that is a challenge.<\/p>\n<p>And who doesn&#8217;t love a sexy challenge?<\/p>\n<p><strong>What about you?
