You\u2019ve no idea what sort of woman I am.\u201d She gave her arm a shake, and he let her go.<\/p>\n<p>He moved forward, and she pivoted back until she came into contact with the wall between the paintings. \u201cI know you\u2019re an actress,\u201d he said smoothly, \u201ccapable of weaving all manner of deception.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her lips curved up in a humorless smile. \u201cMisassumption number one. I\u2019m not really an actress. I was only on the stage for a fortnight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd why is it you haven\u2019t shared that with Louisa if you\u2019ve nothing to hide? I grant she\u2019d be disappointed, but mostly because you withheld the truth. You should consider telling her. Like me, Louisa prizes honesty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She arched a brow. \u201cPerhaps I will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He admired her just then, even if he didn\u2019t believe her. \u201cAn excellent notion. I\u2019m sure your reasons for working at the Haymarket are sound. How did that come to pass anyway?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She stood taller and thrust her chin at him. \u201cI came from Devon several months ago and took a position at the theatre as a seamstress. I only filled in onstage for an actress who left temporarily to care for a sick relative. It was then I had the misfortune of encountering\u2014and being bedeviled\u2014by you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bedeviled? He\u2019d show her bedeviled. He closed the gap between them until they nearly touched. \u201cAnd when is it <em>exactly<\/em> that you came from Devon?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She tipped her head back, but didn\u2019t shrink from him. His lust threatened to destroy any semblance of propriety, which, alone as they were in the gallery, was nonexistent. \u201cSo you really are from Devon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d Her voice deepened, stirring his desire further.<\/p>\n<p>He tucked the stray lock of hair behind her ear. \u201cAnd your parents died last year. Were they ill?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her breathing hitched as his fingers skimmed the outer shell, and he felt a surge of triumph. \u201cA coaching accident.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said you didn\u2019t own any horses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The flash of disquiet in her eyes confirmed the lie.
