So I wrote this romance novel, and I named the hero \u201cNeville.\u201d<\/p>\n

And not only that \u2014 I named him \u201cNeville Chamberlain,\u201d which, if you happen to be acquainted with twentieth-century European history, you\u2019ll know is the name of a frequently reviled British prime minister who\u2019s best known for caving to Hitler, selling out Poland, and single-handedly making \u201cappeasement\u201d into a bad word.<\/p>\n

I know. What was I thinking, right? Romance heroes are supposed to be named \u201cDane\u201d and \u201cDamon\u201d and \u201cDominick.\u201d They\u2019re supposed to be named \u201cMason\u201d and \u201cCane\u201d and \u201cLogan\u201d and \u201cStavros\u201d and \u201cQuinn.\u201d They\u2019re not supposed to be named Neville.<\/p>\n

My heroine, Cath, is well aware of this fact. Here\u2019s a snippet from the novel in question \u2014 titled About Last Night (funny! smart! sexy! only $2.99! on sale now!). The hero and heroine are mid- … ahem. Let\u2019s just say I\u2019m dropping you into the middle of a good part, okay?<\/p>\n

She couldn\u2019t make sense of what she felt. This was sex. Hot sex with an almost-stranger. Except when she met his eyes, it wasn\u2019t. It was the two of them. It was bigger.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s your name?\u201d she asked. The question came out a breathless whisper.<\/em><\/p>\n

He laughed. \u201cNev.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

It was a nice name, unusual. A nickname, she supposed. A nickname for\u2014<\/em><\/p>\n

She sat up suddenly, bracing her elbows on the bed. \u201cShort for Neville?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

The dimple appeared. \u201cOnly my mother calls me that.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Dismayed, she dropped back onto the mattress and covered her eyes with the back of her hand. It was the world\u2019s dorkiest name. Nearly as bad as Rupert. No, maybe a little worse than Rupert. Neville. For goodness\u2019 sake. \u201cI never thought I\u2019d be penetrated by a Neville,\u201d she said wonderingly. \u201cMaybe a Colin, or a Simon, but\u2014\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cShut up.\u201d He drew her other knee up and ground into her with a groan.<\/em><\/p>\n

She\u2019d have said something more, something witty, but she got distracted by the full-body shudder that racked her when City got serious about making her pay for teasing him, and by the sudden knowledge that she might not actually be a one-orgasm gal after all. Maybe it had just been a matter of finding the right guy.<\/em><\/p>\n

Holy hell. That felt\u2014 Wow. \u201cOkay.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

This Neville of mine \u2014 he\u2019s all about changing Cath\u2019s mind about him. It pretty much becomes his life\u2019s work. And his name suits him. He\u2019s English, upper-class, buttoned-up. (At least, when he\u2019s dressed. Naked Nev is another matter.) His father is a history buff, his family rich as Croesus, and in that context, his name makes perfect sense.<\/p>\n

But is that why I chose it? Heck, no!<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s the real story: I named my hero Neville because once, many years ago, I read Elizabeth Jane Howard\u2019s Marking Time series, which follows the fates of the many members of the Cazalet family over several generations and a world war. (These are fabulous books. Read them.) In the first volume of the series, we meet an irritating, puling, charismatic boy named Neville, and he\u2019s awful. But if you keep reading, you get to watch him grow up, and he kind of grows on you. By the end of volume four, I found myself thinking that Neville was such a nice name, I might just use it for one of my children one day. So I did. Book-children count, right?<\/p>\n

That\u2019s the story of my Neville. I hope you don\u2019t like his name, but you read the book anyway. And I also hope that by the time you get to the end, you can\u2019t imagine any better name for a hero. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n

Ruthie Knox<\/strong> figured out how to walk and read at the same time in the second grade, and she hasn\u2019t looked up since. She spent her formative years hiding romance novels in her bedroom closet to avoid the merciless teasing of her brothers and imagining scenarios in which someone who looked remarkably like Daniel Day Lewis recognized her well-hidden sex appeal and rescued her from middle-class Midwestern obscurity.
