Two weeks ago, Ten Ways to Be Adored When Landing a Lord, my third book (and second adult romance) was published. That book was a tough one to write, in large part because the characters refused to behave. Oh, who am I kidding? The characters in Nine Rules to Break When Romancing a Rake didn’t behave either. And, come to think of it . . . I’m currently revising the next book in the series, Eleven Scandals to Start to Win a Duke’s Heart, and these characters like to take little side trips, too.

Before I was a writer, I envied writers. I thought they were puppetmasters with brilliant ideas and stories involving characters who responded with perfect precision. I thought romance authors said to their heroes, “now go here, and fall in love,” and to their heroines, “now go there, and be funny.” And the characters did so, and all was right with the world of Romancelandia.

I thought wrong.

Or, maybe I didn’t and for other authors, characters behave. But mine don’t. They’re difficult and irritating and stubborn and they almost NEVER do what I want them to do. And so, as I take a break from finishing my fourth book, I give you:

Ten Ways (my) Characters Are Almost Certain to Misbehave

1. They will get themselves into ridiculous situations and then stand around staring at me, as though I got them into that club/roof/balcony/outfit, and waiting for me to figure out how to get them out of there.

2. They might just become attracted to someone I was not prepared for them to even meet, let alone become attracted to. *sigh* In this case, open new document. Curse career choice. Start book over again.

3. They will refuse to fall in love—This one happens in every. Single. Book. I’ve come to ignore it. So far, my stubbornness has won the day. I fear the day that it won’t.

4. They will refuse to make love—Oh, heroes with too many scruples. Stop. Messing up. My book.

New York Times Bestseller!

5.  They will decide they don’t like their name. This usually stops the writing process for at least two days in the middle of every book. At which point I threaten to leave them all there, unmoving, unloved, forever. Until they decide what name they want. (Isabel in Ten Ways was Isabelle for two-thirds of the book. And then . . . she got uppity.)

6.  They will wake me up at 4:30 in the morning to tell me that they wish they’d said this in that scene instead of that. As though I haven’t done enough waking up in the middle of the night and wishing I’d said that instead of this in my real life, now I have to worry about my neurotic heroines as well?

7.  The characters from my next book will start getting antsy and barging in on your time with my current book. They will pop up in strange places. Like restaurants and Old Navy. They will say things like, “I know you still don’t know how you’re ending *this* book, but when it comes time for mine, could you make sure I wear a pinstriped waistcoat?”

8. When I reply to the above with a smart-mouthed, “What makes you think you’re ever getting a book?” They respond with a raised eyebrow and, “Just try skipping my book. You’ll never be published again.” And that threat is enough to keep me up at night.

9.  My heroine will make me want to be her friend. This is annoying. Because I will have to leave her to her happily ever after eventually, and then I’ve lost a friend.

10.  My hero will make me fall in love with him. This is also annoying. Because I really can’t afford to fall in love with two men a year *and* have a marriage. Luckily, there is a little of my husband in all of my heroes . . . or maybe that’s the other way around?

Thanks so much for having me Bev!

I love it when Sarah comes by to visit. Did I also mention that TEN WAYS TO BE ADORED WHEN LANDING A LORD landed on the New York Times bestseller list last week!!!! WOOOHOOOO, Sarah!!!!

So of course we must celebrate by giving away more copies of Sarah’s fabulous book! Today 3 (three) winners will receive copies of Sarah’s list topping book. International entrants are welcome!!

59 Replies to “Aint No Misbehavin’…NOT!”

  1. Congrats on hitting the NYT bestseller list. I like your list. I love it when the characters refuse to fall in love because I know that eventually they’ll fall hard and can’t do anything about it.

  2. Congrats on getting on NY bestseller list. Sarah’s book looks great. It is definitely going on my TBR list.
    Thanks for the giveaway.

  3. What a fun post. My favorite is #1. So many times, I read a book and think, now how’s he (or she) going to get out of THAT situation, and how did they get into it in the first place. Loved the first book, totally looking forward to reading this one.

  4. LOL, I can sympathise with you, Sarah. Characters falling in love with the wrong person, refusing to fall in love or wanting a name or status change. If writing can be as smooth as silk, I will have less wrinkles. Congratulations on hitting NYT best-selling list. At least your characters can boast that they are loved by hundreds and thousands of readers, even though they may earn your irk, from time to time.

  5. Congratulations on the NYTimes list! It looks like your characters will be great fun to read. I’ll keep an eye out.

  6. I am as yet unpublished, but I sympathize with your characters doing whatever the heck the want. Mine do the same to me, and if I insist on doing things my way, they pick up their toys and run off somewhere I can’t find them. I’ve learned that if I want to get anything done, I have to let them have their way.

Congrats on making the NYT bestseller list. Next time one of your characters threatens with never being pubbed again, wave that in front of their faces and see what they say. (I know, they’ll laugh at you, but it’s worth a shot.)

  7. Congrats, It is not surprising that you won, I have enjoyed every book Sarah has written. I like that something worth having, is worth fighting for. Men seem to fight loving, women want love . children. But in the end , its Happily Ever After.

  8. LOL — great list. Keep on keeping those characters in line 😉 Congrats on the success of the book.

  9. I ADORED Nine Rules! It’s on my all-time favorite keeper shelf and I’ve re-read scenes numerous times already! And I loved The Season too. I’ve just begun 10 WAYS and I hate having to put it down . . . DARN day job won’t let me read it in one sitting.

Congrats on the NYT Bestsellers list, though I’m not surprised! Keep those troublemaking characters coming! I love them.

    🙂 Brynna

  10. I fell in love with “Nine Rules…..,” and simply fell back in love with “Ten Ways to be Adored When Landing a Lord!” You take us on these journeys of love, laughter and at times tears!

    Bravo, Lady Sarah!!

  11. Congratulations on the NYT Bestseller list! This is absolutely the BEST blog I have come across in a long time. I’ve already found two authors to read, (my husband cries as I say this because he knows we will be making a trip to the nearest Books A Million and coming out with bags of books!) Can’t wait to get started, just have to remind myself to eat :).
Loved the list by the way. Do you just sit down and start writing or do your characters start to form before you ever type the first word?

  12. Congrats, Sarah! I’m gunning for a copy of “Ten Ways…” if only because I don’t get paid again for a bit and I really, REALLY want to read it. I enjoyed “Nine Rules…” so much and I’m so happy both books are doing well!

Your “Ten Ways” list for today was, as usual, hysterical. Mine misbehave, too, so you’re not alone. With number 4, I had the opposite problem when I wrote my marriage of convenience story. My hero just refused to move on if he didn’t get a lil’ somethin’ somethin’. Several of those scenes are going to have to go because they don’t move the plot forward, but at least they served to get my character to cooperate again. Greedy man. Numbers 6 & 7, oh, yeah. They do that to me, too. Last night, actually. They kept me up half the night with, “Oh, and in this scene, could you add this line…?” or “By the way, I forgot to notice the lovely color of her eyes when they shimmered with tears; could you be a dear and make note of that?” In order to move them along when the dig in their heels, I figure out what they would hate and threaten them with it (but not at the expense of the writing coming to an end). For example, for my logical, stoic heroine, I threaten to make her an emotional basket case. Or my villainess obsessed with fashion, I threaten to dress her in rags (or at the very least, gowns from five years ago). That seems to do the trick. *evil cackle*

  13. “landed on the New York Times bestseller list” CONGRATS, Sarah! I can’t wait to read TEN WAYS…
I love number 4. LOL! And I agree with Maureen.
It’s good that your characters challenge you!

  14. Congrats on the NYT list! LOL on your list. I love Nine Rules and can’t wait to read this book!

  15. Hi Sarah I would love to read this book. It seems like such a great story. I had no idea that your charcaters misbehaved so much. I guess they are testing out the boundries. But not wanting to fall in love? Why ever not I wonder… Congrats on getting on the NYT bestseller list!

  16. Congratulations! I’ve heard so many great things about both books. I really enjoy how you talk about your characters – so real!!!

  17. Chuckled through your list of misbehavior from characters. I love the humor of your titles.

  18. Congrats on making he NYT Bestseller list. Loved your list. Haven’t had a chance to buy/read Ten Ways yet but it is on my list of books.

  19. Congrats on the new release, Sarah. NINE RULES was just plain fun to read! I am so looking forward to reading TEN WAYS, and then putting it on my keeper shelf right next to NINE RULES.

  20. Congratulations on your 2nd NYT Bestseller. I really enjoyed your last book and look forward to reading this one. I must say, however, that I can’t wait to read the final book to see what happens between Isabelle and her duke.

  21. Congratulations on making the NYT Bestsellers list! I love your list to pieces, your characters are such…characters. 😀

  22. I love your titles Sarah, and the lists are always so much fun. I’m looking forward to reading Ten Ways to Be Adored When Landing a Lord.

  23. Not surprised! Sarah is one of the best new authors! Nine Rules… is a keeper and I can’t wait to read Ten Ways….!

  24. Enjoyed reading the comments. Your book sounds really good and I have added it to my TBR list. I like the ways they misbehave.

  25. Thanks so much to Bev and everyone for the warm welcome! I love coming over to The Season! I actually found writing this post to be very very cathartic. Every once in a while, you have to vent about people who take over your life as if it’s your own!

Thank you to all of you who have read Nine and Ten for the kind words…I hope Eleven Scandals to Start to Win a Duke’s Heart will live up to the others!

@Maureen – considering I just spent the night at the Emergency Vet with a dog who got himself into a stash of dark chocolate, I hear you on the animals/children connection. Yes. Just as frustrating!

@Aislinn – It sounds like you have figured out the hardest part of all this! Let them have their way. Like spoiled kids. (see Maureen’s comment, above!)

@Beth – The characters come first, then the conflict…then I start writing. If there’s no conflict, you can have the best characters in the world, and they just won’t make for a good book!

@Noelle – LOL! I am glad I am not alone!

@Valerie – So happy you like the titles! I came up with Nine by myself…with Ten and Eleven, it was a team effort — they are the hardest part of these books…but Eleven is the last rhyming title…then I move on to a new series and new titles!

  26. I am about half way thru 10. I am taking my time with it as the characters are so multi-level and interesting and surprising, I don’t want to get to the end and then have a long wait for the next one. And I can see why you think they are contrary, the contrariness shines thru.

  27. I just finished your novel yesterday Sarah! I could barely put it down and when I had to for work or sleep, Isabel and Nick were both yelling at me to pick it back up again! Can’t wait for the next book and congrats on TEN WAYS making the bestseller list 🙂

  28. Congrats!

Since I liked Nicholas better than Gabriel in NINE RULES (he was nicer to Callie than Gabriel was), I can’t wait to read TEN WAYS!

  29. “They will wake me up at 4:30 in the morning to tell me that they wish they’d said this in that scene instead of that.” Love it! I bet they can be annoying, too! LOL

  30. Ten ways to misbehave is a great concept. I especially like when the hero or heroine get in a jam and have to wiggle out of it through their own sneaky ways. Refusing to meet and refusing to talk means that eventually they’ll end up in bed one way or another. Thanks for making me grin.

  31. Wait…So writers aren’t puppetmasters?

Great insight on your writing triumphs and tribulations, Sarah. Don’t take took long of a break b/c I can’t wait to read that one you’re working on! 🙂

PS – Glad to hear your pooch is doing well! When the Fur Babies are down, no one is up!

  32. LOL at the popping up at random places. I just got hired at Old Navy, so it’s cool to see your characters inspire you everywhere (even at clothing stories).

Misbehaving characters can be tiresome, but they only make your story better (most of the time). I always get caught a few days after I make a decision by the sudden burst of inspiration. Grrr…

Congrats on the Success of the new book, Sarah!

  33. I love hearing this Sarah. I always wonder how authors can be so darn creative, but sometimes I forget the battles they have to fight to get to that witty conversation and slapstick situation.

  34. Congrats on the NYT bestseller list!!! I LOVED Ten Ways and can’t wait until Eleven Scandals comes out!!

  35. I’ve been a fan of Sarah’s since we first read The Season. Nine Rules was a nice adult book, so I am looking forward to Ten Ways. Congratulations on your success!

  36. Hi Sarah!! I enjoyed reading your post, especially your very funny “Ten Ways (my) Characters Are Almost Certain to Misbehave” list. Congratulations with your book–TEN WAYS TO BE ADORED WHEN LANDING A LORD making the New York Times Bestseller list!! 🙂 The book looks wonderful, and what a gorgeous cover!

  37. Congratulations on making the NY Times Best Seller List.
Your lists are always a great read. We must smile at ourselves and life. Better to smile than to let it drive us nuts. Know this will be a good read. Look forward to the next one coming out. sounds like your pesky characters will be both helping and hindering in that department.

  38. Congrats on you latest and its spectacular showing on the NYT Bestseller List !! Can’t wait to read it.

I am cracking up at your list as it sounds SO much like the things that happen to me as I am writing. There are times I want to tie my characters up and slap them around a bit until they learn to behave. NEVER HAPPENS! For the most part they keep ME tied up and slap me around!

  39. Congrats on your next book! I liked the list. You always make me smile 🙂 Thanks for sharing the personal insite to writing. I had no clue and it is fun to find out about it! Sorry your characters are so much trouble…but you seem to make it all work out in the end!

  40. Ahhh 😀 Your list is hilarious and so true! I hate how characters are just so stubborn! Makes me wonder how published authors do it!
