romancingthebillionaire

The Billionaire Boys Club is a secret society. Six men of astonishing wealth. But there’s one thing money can’t buy. When it comes to love, success doesn’t come so easily…

Jonathan Lyons. Playboy, billionaire, and adventurer, he lives life on the edge. When he hears that his mentor, Dr. Phineas DeWitt, had a secret journal that leads to a legendary artifact, Jonathan takes action. It stirs his blood, but it comes with a heady challenge: DeWitt’s daughter Violet. She has what Jonathan needs. And she’s not giving it up it to the man who broke her heart.

Violet is Jonathan’s weakness—he’s still in love despite their volatile breakup a decade ago. But Violet’s memories have a sharper edge. She’s never forgiven him for abandoning her. Or so she thought. When Jonathan’s attentions turn seductive, she’s in danger of falling for him all over again. And she can’t help but wonder…does he really want her, or just what she’s hiding?

It’s been a while since I’ve walked down Billionaire Lane. I’ve been enjoying a string of heroes who aren’t billionaires, but regular Joes working for the man. Sure they may own their businesses, but they are still putting in the hours every day. No jaunts overseas or private jets, except in this book… there’s plenty of that.

If anyone is looking for escapist and a bit out of the realm of reality this billionaire story definitely has that in spades. From destinations like Detriot to Arizona followed by London to Greece, it’s nice and widespread. I enjoyed the hop, skip, and jump of the settings in the book and found myself impressed with how the author kept them low-key but still meaningful.

Another point in Clare’s favor, she surprised me. The main characters, do not follow the mold with our hero, Jonathan being much more sensitive and less alpha male then I expected. A delight to be sure. Violet is little more alpha and vindictive. I understood her attitude, but believe she held onto it a bit too long.

This book is not like Romancing the Stone, though the name is similar. If you’re expecting exotic venues, yes. Suspense including plots, no. A contemporary through and through, while Jonathan and Violet are treasure hunting, so-to-speak, the main focus is them reconciling their past. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I love reunited lovers as a trope so in that way I was automatically committed.

I got lost where the characters took forever to grow and the same arguments kept running in circles. Sometimes you can beat the points to death, but in the end both characters developed and the story ended in a beautiful HEA. Is there any other way? Nope, not in my book.

Overall, if you enjoy billionaires, far away ports of call, lovers who were separated by past mistakes, and history this is the book for you. Readers who get a kick out of Jackie Ashenden’s Billionaires books will most likely enjoy this series.

P.S. There are riddles and poetry.
